iTunes won't download to MP3 player

I have purchased music in iTunes and while it downloads okay to my computer, my mp3 player doesn't recognize the music. Do you have to use an iPod with iTunes? I tried going to preferences in iTunes-Advanced and setting it to MP3 but it still won't work. Help!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Most music purchased from the iTunes store is protected by a DRM and in the AAC format. Does your mp3 player support the AAC format?
