Message "time-out" during downloads

Can someone tell me why, when I want to download an update or other file, I keep getting the message, "timed-out" and the download stops.
Thanks,

Hi, Coach -

Welcome to Apple's Discussions.

This problem usually occurs with a machine using a dial-up connection. There is a setting in the Modem control panel to set a wait interval of inactivity, after which the connection is automatically terminated. For some reason the process of downloading a file is not treated as "activity"for this purpose.

Solutions include -

• Setting the inactivity period in the Modem control panel to a greater length of time.

• Set your email program to check for mail at intervals a bit shorter than the inactivity wait period set in the Modem control panel. The act of checking mail will be perceived as activity, resetting the timer.

Many browsers also permit the resumption of an interrupted download.

For example: in Internet Explorer, open the Download Manager (in Tools menu). Double-click the interrupted item in the list. A new window will open, showing some info about that item. Click the "Reload" button - the activity bar will go rapidly to the point downloading was interrupted, then it will resume the download at that point.
