I'm not running games or anything graphic intensive -- sometimes just mail and Safari. It's not reproducible; there isn't 1 single thing I can do to get it to happen. I've reset pram, the PMU...
Does anyone have thoughts on whether this is a driver problem or a hardware problem? Thanks

I spent an hour on the phone with applecare on saturday, they believe that I have a faulty graphics card. A rep is coming out on wedesday afternoon to install a new one.
I will post here again afterwards with it's success or otherwise 🙂
I'm also getting this problem from WoW after it's been playing a while.. I too checked temp and everything seemed cool. I'm actually on 10.5.2 9C20 not 10.5.1 and even though it had a graphics update (which fixed some issues) this issue is not one of the fixes 😟
Around same time in my log though i noticed disk requests were also sent by system by spotlight to do something on one of drives..and both the GPU and SATA card reported timeout or not found. Seems to me like the problem could actually be related to task ordering and nvidia card being shorthanded pipe bandwidth by another device because the OS decided that while the card needed the bandwidth, spotlight should update the index on one of the SATA drives. I could be misreading though.

I also see the same problem , the macbook pro is just 6 weeks old (built in 10/2007).
The rom version of the graphics card shows: 3175.
It happened to me twice today while working with adobe photoshop/bridge.

I will contact the dealer next week, this is not what I expected from my first mac.
I'm afraid it is an hardware issue. I'll keep you posted how Apple in Germany deals with that.
I had filed a bug through ADC to apple on issue to see what they would say and they said they already had an open ticket on issue. Bug ID# 5683909 and in email when i asked about status of original bug ticket then. They Replied:
"At this time, there isn't any new information available for this issue. I have checked with engineering, and the issue is still being investigated.
We will do our best to keep you informed as new information becomes available, or to contact you for additional testing/regression/debugging. Please be sure to regularly check the release notes for potential or related fixes that might affect this issue. "
Have you filed the bug about the NEW MacBookPro 2.2GHz (Santa Rose chipset) with the NVidia GeForce 8600M GT graphic card?? Or about an older MacBookPro with an ATI graphic card?

Same problem here. I have a MBP 17" with the well known NVidia GeForce 8600M GT graphic card.
Nvidia does not support online the card for mac so no drivers found.
Apple do not recognize this as an issue so my MBP freezes like a Vista PC and I can't do nothing else that reboot and reboot. I have noticed that it freezes sometimes less when you've the AC plug on without the battery, but it's not a solution.
More than this I have issues with random Airport disconnections when I have the battery instead of the AC and with parameters for printing with Leopard on my Epson rx 500.
This time Apple did not do a good job, this issue is on from october 07, when I bought the computer and no solutions seem to arise...
I don't know what we need to do, that Apple finally fixes this bug!! I also have my MBP since October '07 and there is still no fix! The biggest problem is that we don't even know if the Apple developer team knows about this issue! Or if they think that we are only a few stupid clients which have no idea about what we talk...
We urgently need a fix for this VERY CRITICAL BUG!
Err the Mac OS X 10.5.2 combo update and the Leopard graphic driver update afterwards fixed for me all problems!!!! So it was a software issue! I'm on a MacBook Pro 2.2GHz with Santa Rosa chipset (bought end-October 07).
iDVD and SecondLife work now without a crash and no "Graphics channel exception" occurs now anymore.
It's really strange that some people have this problem only now AFTER these two updates! What model do you have and when did you buy it?
