MacBook Pro won't Sleep or Shut Down

My 15-inch 2.15GHz MacBook Pro won't Sleep or Shut Down. The only way to turn it off is to hold down the Power button.

When I choose Sleep from the Apple menu, or by pressing the Power button, nothing happens. If I close the lid the computer does not go to sleep, although the screen powers down and does not come on again when I open the lid.

When I choose Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by pressing the Power button, the machine goes to the blue screen and hangs there with the rotating circle.

I have reset the PRAM.
I have reset the SMC.

I don't know if it is related, but I also have a problem whereby the computer sporadically does not respond to input from the keyboard.

Any ideas, please?

Try trashing these 3 .plist preferences and reboot. Reset your Energy Saver preferences.

HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration > com.apple.AutoWake.plist & com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systemuiserver.plist

I was having a problem with my MacBook Pro. It would not shutdown or restart when I used the Apple Menu. The Finder and all other programs would close and all that was left on the screen was my wallpaper but it wouldn't shut down or restart. I had to press and hold the power button to shut it down or press Command-Option-Power to restart it.

For a while I thought it might be a recent MacBook Pro Update I had installed; I also ran a hardware test and tried creating another user account but it still wasn't working.

After a while I remembered I had changed the name of the computer on System Preferences and decided to change it back the way it was. After that my MacBook Pro was able to restart and shut down without any problems; I guess that's a bug on OS X.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

I had the same issue until I read this topic.
I did that manipulation :

Try trashing these 2 .plist preferences and reboot.
Reset your Energy Saver preferences.

HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration > com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systemuiserver.plist

and everything works fine again now.
thanks for your comment on that, it's helped me.

cheers from switzerland

Hi,

I had the same issue until I read your topic.
I did that manipulation :

Trashed these 2 .plist preferences and reboot. Had not the third mentionned file.

HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration > com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systemuiserver.plist

that helped one time. 😟

I have shutdown my macbook pro one time with success. I tested it again and again no results. Now if i redo the manipulation the triks works anymore.

Have you maybe another solution to provide us ?

thanks in advance
