I have a new Mac laptop. I use Pages for word processing. I do not have Microsoft Word. I cannot open .doc attachments to emails. There is no "File>Open" on the Bar. What do you suggest?

    Save the attachment to your desktop. Once it's there,click on the doc's icon to select it, then type command-I (Get Info). In the Open With menu, select Pages (or navigate to it if it's not in the list). Click on the Change All button. You're done. Now double-click on the doc's icon and it should open in Pages.

    I get as far as having Pages available as he choice to open the document, but it is shadowed and cannot be selected. I can select and open Pages normally in Applications. Any further suggestions about why Pages cannot be selected?

    I can't guarantee this will work, but it's worth trying: in the Finder, click on Finder > Preferences > Advanced > Show All File Extensions. See if that file has a .doc extension. If not, add it. Open up the Get Info window again, and see if that method works.

    If not, try starting up Pages, click on File > Open, and see if you can open the file that way.

    I have run into a few docs Pages can't open as well. For this reason I keep a copy of the free app, NeoOffice on my mac. It is a little slow starting but has been able to open all files. In addition it handles excel and powerpoint files as well.
