Recreating 16-bit video game music

Hey,

I've been screwing around recreating oldschool video game music, and it's been an absolute blast so far. I'm finding that the soundtracks from the first two Sonic the Hedgehog games are particularly fun, and a good exercise for learning Garageband. (If any other n00bs like myself are wondering what's a good way to learn it, this one worked for me). Full credit to Masato Nakamura who composed the music for these games!

My only issue is that sometimes finding the closest instrument to match the original. Sometimes this can be pretty easy, while other times I just can't seem to find the right fit, even after going though the real and synth instruments.

I was just wondering if anyone else out there had used GarageBand to rewrite video game music, and if they have any advice. Advice on matching instruments would be great, but honestly I'm as open to any general advice on projects of this sort.

(Oh, and are any of the Jam Packs particularly good for rewriting oldschool video game music?)

Upon further investigation, you do not need the synth I mentioned above. Instead, under the instrument list, choose Synthesizer. Choose the "All Swell" preset and turn off the EQ, Echo, and Reverb settings. Now click the edit (pencil button) for the synth and move all the slider settings to zero except "Cutoff"--move that to maximum.

Play with these settings and you should get a nice Atari sound.

Old video games used standard sine, sawtooth, pulse, and square waves. You will need a bare bones synth to give you those. Try the Analog Factory by Arturia. It will give you those basic waves.
