iPod battery sign with exclamation mark

Hi

I've had my 60 GB iPod for 2 years now. After I fully charge the battery, a few hours later, I go to use it and I get an image on the screen that I have never seen before.

It is of a battery that is 1/4 full. Beside it is a triangle with an exclamation mark inside of it. The image only disappears after I recharge my battery. However, it is NOT the same image that I normally get when I need to charge my battery. This is totally different.

Does this mean I need to replace my battery soon? If I replace it, will I lose all the music that is currently on my iPod?

This whole week, I have been having major iPod/iTunes problems. This battery sign on my iPod has literally come out of no where.

Please advise.

You're certainly due for a new battery and, yes, your iPod will be wiped clean. Actually, Apple ships you a different (refurbished) but identical unit. Howver, it's no big deal. Connect it to your computer and do a sync.

Most persons don't realize that these Li-Ion batteries have a limited quantity of charges, after which they need to be replaced. Obviously depending on usage, eighteen months is reasonable.

But I don't want a refurbished iPod. I've never had any major problems with it ... other than the whole iTunes mess which I thought was my iPod but wasn't.

My iPod was given to me as a gift and it was engraved at the back. It was ordered directly through the Apple website when they used to provide that service (not sure if they still do). So if they give me a refurbished one, will they replicate the engraving?

sigh

How long does it normally take to get the iPod back from Apple? Cause I need it for a function on the Labour Day long weekend.
