How to repair corrupted .mov files?

I am running 10.3.9 with QT 7.2.0
I had a failing hard disk.
As a result of that I now have some corrupted .mov files created with my Digital Camera.

When I try to open them with QT it comes back with:
"The film could not be opened"

When I try to open with GC (Graphic Converter)
"System error -2048 occurred in document xxxx.mov"
According to Thorsten Lemke this comes from the QuickTime toolbox.

When I try to open with VLC it comes with:
"mp4: MP4 plugin discarded (no moov box)"

Using a hex editor I copied some data of a working .mov into a failing .mov
And I got it to open and run correctly

So now I am looking for a description of the file-layout of how a .mov should be.
Or if someone could hint in any direction to repair my corrupted .mov files?

Thanks in advance

Jan

Hi Jan - did you ever find a solution to your problem? I just posted a similar one. (see my post of 8/15 "QT won't play QT recorded 3 mos ago") I'm running os 10.4.1 and was able to get the movie to play using VLC 7.1a. I tried the new VLC 8.3 but it just hung the video after about 10 secs, audio still worked though. I, like you am looking for an app to repair the file or, failing that, a way to edit the file and take out the corrupted stuff and save it again as a usable file.

Hope you found something.
