Verizon vz access will not load

I have a vz access card for Verizon broadband. I've loaded the software and and use the card on my imac G4 and my 15" powerbook G4. However, I have loaded (and reloaded) the same software on my 12" powerbook G4, and although the icon appears in the hard disk and in the dock, the program will not configure or load--so my 12" is basically useless to me since it is my travel machine. Does anyone know what the problem is? Thank you.

powerbook G4, Mac OS X (10.3.9), 384 MB, 867 MHz

You say you have a broadband access card, and although I'm not a Verizon Wireless customer, (Sprint), I believe the simple answer is that the 12-inch PowerBook can't work with that device because we don't have PCMCIA slots in our machines.

You can probably access the internet connection if you connect to your other Mac with internet sharing enabled so that your 12-inch PowerBook can go online while the other Mac is online.

But again, that works with your 15-inch PowerBook. How did you get it to work on your iMac, which also doesn't have a PCMCIA slot?

If your question is in regard to sharing your internet connection from your VZ Access card to your other Macs, then I may be able to help with that.

Ah, I see. Your description ("card") leads us to believe you have a broadband card. USB modem is different from a card.

Why don't you try this. Create a new user account with administrator privileges, and then load your VZ Access software on it (that new account), and see if it works there.

If it does, there might be a system conflict that's not allowing you to load the program on your main user account.

I get that from time to time on my Mac mini. My Photoshop Elements will work on my main account, but on a secondary account, it doesn't. So I end up having to load and reinstall the software again.

Okay, here's the next diagnosis.

Are you running the SAME exact versions of OS X on all your computers? Since it works on your iMac, and your 15-inch PowerBook, what system is running on your 12-incher?

Also, are there anything that you may have installed on your 12-inch that isn't on your other two computers (which may somehow be causing a conflict)?

By the same token, did you install anything on your iMac and 15-incher that your 12-incher needs in order to run the VZ Access software?

I know that's mind-boggling, but at this point, that's how to deduce what the problem is, since you have two out of three machines that work fine for you with your USB modem and the VZ Access software.

Because, 80% of the time, installing software on a fresh/new user account will work since that is a clean account without any other installations/preferences/etc. that would "corrupt" the installation process.

So that is my assumption right now. You are either missing something on your 12-inch PowerBook that is not allowing you to run it (or have something on it that clashes with your VZ access software), or your OS X version is not the same as your other two Macs.

Again, thank you for the effort you have expended on this.

All of my macs use 10.3.9, and they all use the same programs.

Before I began having trouble with the verizon program my 12" was incurring kernel panics. After speaking with Apple and running all the hardware diagnostics, I reloaded the apple operating system while preserving my existing programs. Thinking that would solve the kernel attack problem, and having acquired the vz access usb modem for my 15" in the meantime, I loaded the verizon program on my 12" and experienced the problem described in my first email. And the kernel panics continued.

Then I did a clean reload of the operating system, deleting my programs and files. I reloaded Office X (in the course of which I discovered that the stuffit expander file loaded from my Apple disk was corrupted) and Firefox. The kernel panics have ceased. However, when I loaded the verizon software, I had the same problem as before.

My Photoshop Elements will work on my main account, but on a secondary account, it doesn't. So I end up having to load and reinstall the software again.

There are two likely possiblities here:

1. Is this an administrative account? PE is not designed to be run from a standard user account, unfortunately, only a user with admin rights.

2. Have you tried deleting preferences instead of reinstalling? (com.adobe.Photoshop.Elements.plist, the PE settings/preferences folder and the PE paths folder, all of which are in your username>library>preferences)

Hmm. Now I'm baffled, because all the "tricks" I know of are off the list. Have you tried asking Verizon Wireless, by chance?

Now here's the other question? What's the megahertz on your machines? Is there a lower one on your 12-inch? And does the software from Verizon require something more?

That's all I can think of for now. I will see what else I can do to help.

Hi. Thanks for stepping in. It is an administrator account, though secondary. I believe it's a hard drive issue. (I bought my Mac mini on eBay, so that may have been the reason why they got rid of it).

It doesn't happen to all my apps, but just the Photoshop Elements. It's not a biggie. It hasn't happened since. I only gave it as an example.

I also know it's a hard drive issue because, I think I've said this somewhere before in the forums, when I save a file in Photoshop, I'll open it later and it says "disk error" or "I/O error" and the file will open, but the bottom layer is corrupt while the top is fine, or vice versa.

Anyway, do you think you can help our friend, the original poster? I'm baffled at this point. As I responded to him, I've tried everything I know of.
