Bluetooth Power on/off

Bluetooth Power on/off

I am new to bluetooth devices, but I have read that for security purposes that you should keep bluetooth power set to off when it is not in use. However I do not see an option for this in the bluetooth preference pane. All I see is where it says bluetooth power on at the top but I can't switch it off.

Can anyone help? thank you

PowerMac G3 Blue & White, Mac OS X (10.4.10), Logitech optical mouse.

jyhm,

In the Bluetooth system preference pane, right next to where it says "Bluetooth Power On" there is a big button that reads "Turn Bluetooth Off."

However, an alternative way to increase security without sacrificing Bluetooth is to uncheck the "Discoverable" option. This will prevent other users from detecting your Mac's bluetooth signal.

Well thank you for the reply,..

My Bluetooth panes must be messed up because I am missing that big button, and the option to turn bluetooth power off in the menu. See images below.

Jyhm,

Go to ~/username/library/preferences

and delete these files:

com.apple.bluetooth.plist
com.apple.bluetoothfileexchange.plist

Then restart your Mac, open the bluetooth preference window and see if the option to turn Bluetooth off is back. My gut feeling is that something more than just your preference file is wrong, but this is the best thing to start with. Let me know if it works!

Tried the preferences option but that did not work.

Also did other things like Permissions, NV-RAM, PRAM, fsck blah blah blah.

My bluetooth preference pane icon looks ok from the gecko.

I hope I don't have to archive and install, I hate that!

I have the same problem. It definitely used to be there. I'm not sure if it's connected with changing my bluetooth adapter from a D-Link DBT-120 to a DBT-122 or a Software Update, or something else?
