Listen to music with my Bluetooth headset

I just found out that if you are on a call with a BT headset and you start to play music, you can hear the music through your BT headset. I also found out how to get the sounds/music to go through the BT with out having a call come in. Just go to PHONE/VOICEMAIL and set the audio to the BT headset. When you now play music you hear it in the BT headset. You also hear the beeps when you get email and text messages. When a call comes in it will stop the music and you can talk to the person, then the music starts back again but it won't play in the BT headset after that.

Apple really needs to fix it so you have the option of listing to your music in your BT headset.

You can still hear sounds and songs through the phone though even with this option and it sounds like crap through the Bluetooth headset, nice find though.

Yup, I discovered that one too. But as Gibson noticed, it is voice quality, not music quality. Not much bass in them thar hills. Hopefully apple will support the BT streaming music profile in the phone and in the headset at some point. (hopefully soon.)

I also didn't like the fact that it played on the phone when it also played in the BT headset. I tried to plug in the earphones and select the BT headset and it would only use the earphones for the music.

I understand its not the best quality but sometimes you just want to listen to something in the BT headset and not worry about pulling out the earphones.

Inspired by this thread, I went to the voicemail page of iPhone and selected Apple Headset, then went to iPod mode and listened to a Terry Gross interview Podcast through the headset.

Not bad!! Agreed, it's too bad it also plays through the iPhone speaker, but its not too loud. The streaming quality is voice quality (not music quality) which is fine and dandy for podcasts.

It was nice to listen to a podcast unencumbered by cables! Apple should make this an intentional feature! 😉

Apple has every means of making this a possible feature with just a simple update. I'm sure that Apple is working on something else having to do with this feature or they would have already put this function into the iphone. Apple is a business, they have to keep finding new ways to make money, lol.

I don't know if NOT having this as a feature is about money. I don't see anyway they could make money for allowing someone to listen to music/podcasts in a BT headset.

Simple... they sell more iPhones. This will become a defacto feature in all smartphones or phones that have music built-in. If you don't have it, you won't be able to compete in the future.

Apple can get away without it now, but not later.

Of course they can make money off of this, suddenly apple comes out with a brand new bluetooth stereo headset and then suddenly the iphone has an easy feature of listening to music through the headset.

If apple wanted this feature in the iphone at first, it would have been there, they didn't think about this cell phone for years and forget that people might want to listen to music through a bluetooth headset.

I dunno about that. The BT signal from his headset is very weak... holding my iPhone at arms length on a call using the BT set gives a lot of static - enough to make the callers voice disappear. Ditto for putting it in my pocket.

So if I have to have the phone out anyway - what's the point of a $129 headset? Mine's going back tomorrow.

Also works with my Motorola S9. Too Bad Apple can't do what Motorola has been doing for a while. The sound quality is not for music with the S9 on the iPhone, though, but it works great on the Razor.

The sound isn't bad on a Plantronics 590 headset.
I get about 20-30 feet range on the Bluetooth.
I just got up to feed the cat and only experienced a little cracle when
the refrigerator door was in the way.
Not hi-fi or stereo, but listenable.
I hope the stereo headset profile will be supported soon!

BTW, you can turn down the volume on the phone most of the way
and turn it up on the headset using the headset volume controls.

I haven't tried the voicemail method to route audio to the headset, but does that require you to dial your voicemail to enable the audio to play through the Apple headset? If so, wouldn't we get charged for the minutes accessing voicemail?

No, gman901, it is selecting the "audio" source in the upper right corner of the phone>voicemail pane, then going back to the iPod function. It only works on mine if the bluetooth is turned on, otherwise the iPhone only shows "speaker" instead of "audio."

No minutes have been harmed in this experiment.

How did you turn down the volume on the phone and be able to turn the volume up on the BT headset? When I turn down either one the volume goes down on both.

I don't think you can adjust one or the other with out both being affected.
