ipod error - cannot read or write to ipod - help!

I've just tried to update me ipod mini and an error message comes up telling me that itunes cannot read or write to my ipod. i've restored the factory settings and tried again. itunes allowed me to copy about 3 albums to the ipod and then the message came up again.

does anyone have any ideas?
