Here is a direct link that usually works, to the utility ChangeShortName by Dan Frakes.

Read all of the instructions carefully, and proceed cautiously, as an improper change can result in unwanted results.

Such as;

Return to Default Desktop, Apparent "Loss" of Home Directory

It really is not difficult. The script does all the work. The warnings make it sound pretty forbidding, though. Read through the directions a couple of times to be sure you got it down and try it. If you are concerned that you might mess it up, make a clone/backup of your entire HDD so that if you mess up you can go back to it and clone back. If you need help with this just holler.

But, although I have never used it, there have been many users who have reported positive results using ChangeShortName.
