Printer driver installed-not in printer list.

Epson Picturemate Deluxe. Installed latest Intel compatible drivers. Print Center recognizes printer, can't find driver. I can find it, it's right in...

/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter/PictureMateDX.plugin

Repaired permissions, reset printing system, reboot, all the usual stuff. Am I missing something? ***?!?!

Nope, no such choice in More Printers. As I said, the printer shows up in the printer list. Print center tries to find the driver, can't, and leaves me with the "please select driver or printer model" menu for the "Print Using:" choice. Navigate to Epson, no PictureMateDX choice listed. Try "Other", navigate to the driver, which is installed (yes it's the new intel compatible version), select it, it doesn't load, and I'm right back to "please select driver or printer model".

What gives?!?! This is a Mac, it's supposed to just work. It's gotta be something simple I'm missing, I'm kind of a tech nerd and I've done all the complicated stuff! 🙂

Typically the drivers for direct connection printers don't provide an option of navigating to the manufacturers folder in Library/Printers. The software is meant to detect the printer when it is connected and for most Mac's it does work this way. But when it doesn't then it usually requires a removal of the printer software and a reinstall. Now looking at the Espon support web site, it does mention a problem if the driver on the included CD is installed before installing the Universal version from their web site. Here's a copy of that info...

Important pre-installation instructions: The Macintosh OS X driver found on the CD provided with your product is not intended for use with Intel-based Macintosh computers. If you have already installed the OS X printer driver provided on your product CD, please follow these important instructions before installing the "epson11846.dmg" file:
1. Open the OS X "Printer Setup Utility".
2. Select the "Printer Setup Utility" tab and click "Reset Printing System...".
3. Click the "Reset" button.
4. Restart your computer.
5. Install the downloaded "epson11846.dmg" file.

If you have already done this then try opening Disk Utility and running Repair Disk Permissions. This can sometimes help to get installed software working.

I found the PictureMate manual and it does show that if the printer doesn't automatically install after selecting the printer in the Default Browser view, then you should be able to select More Printers and then Epson USB. Since you don't have that option then it does sound like the Epson software didn't install correctly so the steps above may be the answer. Otherwise I would see if the installer has an unistall option (as the Reset Printing System doesn't always remove vendor installed applications) to remove the PictureMate software. If it doesn't then you may have to delete the Espon folder (from Library/Printers), empty the Trash, restart and then install the Intel PictureMate software again.

Hi, I have the similar problem with my canon S520 printer. I did everything mentioned above. The printer seem to work fine when directly connected by USB but I could not find it in the list when I tried to install it as a network printer. All the drivers listed there were the ones I downloaded from Guten-Print and sadly, they do not support my printer. Any assistance will be much appreciated!

Hi,
It is true that the Canon S520 is shown on the list of supported printters (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301175#canondrivers) but there is no "X" in the column "Modern driver".
That means that you can't use the S520 when connected to a Windows PC.
Here is the text from the page:

"Drivers that are not denoted as Modern Drivers cannot be selected when adding an IP printer or Windows shared printer."

I had a similar problem with my Canon i990 connected to a Windows PC.
The solution: I bought the PrintFab package ( http://www.printfab.net/).

If you don't want to purchase the PrintFab application as Rob suggested, you should be able to use either the S500 or S800 driver from the version of Gutenprint you downloaded. I use the S800 Gutenprint 5.0.1 driver to print to an XP shared S750. At first the print was faint, but once I changed the Image setting to Text, the print quality improved.

I have the same issue with the PictureMate Viewer Deluxe printer (500 model) - no auto-detect, no EPSON USB selection, unable to load plugin via library.

I have successfully installed an Epson RX700 via USB on the same iMac7. The printer drivers for the RX700 were automatically detected by the the setup wizard. Couldn't have been easier!

Very frustrating - this same PictureMate printer was connected to an iMac G5 with no issues.

The reason I'm saying you folks have a system software problem is that Epson USB is installed with OS X by default - it should be on every OS X Mac in the More Printers section. If it isn't, your OS X install (even from the factory) is defective.

Is it possible that the printers you are working with have instructions that tell you to uninstall or delete something before trying to install the driver?
