G4 Cube Optical drive not recognizing discs.

I'm the proud owner of a hand-me down G4 cube that is still running OS 9.something. I'd like to turn into a juke-box. The biggest problem is that at the moment, the disc drive won't recognize any media. I mean, when you try to insert the disc, the drive should pull it in and start spinning. None of that happens. It just sits there, half in and half out. I can push it nearly all the way in, still nothing (and then I need to remove it with needle-nose pliers). The system profiler recognizes that the disc drive is installed, but that's about it.

So, my question is two-fold:
1) Does anyone have any good ideas on how to get this disc drive working again without dropping a lot (any - I'm a poor student!) money?

2) If not, is there a way to (once I upgrade the RAM, of course) install OSX without using the disc drive? Through firewire, filesharing, or something similar?

Thanks!

Look in <http://www.cubeowner.com> for information on fixing the optical drive, and just about anything else in the Cube.

If you have a FireWire DVD drive, or another Mac (with a DVD drive) new enough to use FireWire Target Disk Mode, you can install Tiger without a working optical drive on the Cube.

There is a firmware update for the Cube

Well.. I finally managed to scrape together enough RAM to exceed OS 10.3 requirements. But the target mode startup seems to have failed.

It gets as fare as "100% complete" installation. But, before it can adavance to 'finishing up', the death-pinwheel rears its ugly head. The only way to break its spinning is by pulling out the firewire cable, at which point it says there were problems, please try again...(and again and again).
