Inventory Video

I have been hoping Apple would add the ability to iMovie to import all of my video from miniDV tapes (over 50 hours worth) and video clips from my digital camera (100s) and categorize them (a la keywords in iPhoto) into an inventory of video that are easily accessible. I have been considering purchasing an application like FootTrack to do this. My question is whether importing all of my video into iMovie 08 will make them also available to FCP? Or should I go ahead and use FootTrack as my master inventory of video and the source for both iMovie and FCP?
