There was no AppleScript in Pages 1.0 either, but it came in Pages 2.0. It is fairly likely to come in a future version of Numbers as well. Apple are probably just saving the goodies for later.
Well, yes but... In order to impress everyone it would have to be a huge goodie bag. However, it is hardly Apple's intention to impress everyone who is using all Excel's functionality today. iWork and Numbers is positioned as a product for "the rest of us" - those who do not need more than the basics.
Correct! I deliberately chose not to define "basics", because it is very different from one user to another. I could never stand AppleWorks' spreadsheet because it did not auto-complete dates for example. "If this were only fixed!" I said, as I switched to Excel. I am sure that most other users did not care at all about auto-completed dates.
Whether Apple has chosen the right functionality for a first release of Numbers, I cannot tell, but I guess sales figures will tell us later on.
Will the sales figures really tell Apple about Numbers? After all, Numbers is just part of the iWork '08 package. I will probably buy iWork '08, mainly to use Keynote, and, to a lesser extent, Pages. After my preliminary look, I doubt I will use Numbers at all. What this means is that the sales of iWork '08 will say little or nothing about how many people actually use Numbers.
I will find Numbers useful for presentations. I have a great need for small spreadsheets presented alongside (for example) graphics, and as lame as Numbers (presently) appears to be, it will serve a purpose.
But for serious spreadsheet work, it's back to Excel.
I, too, was appalled at the lack of AppleScript access. I could not believe it. But, Pages and Keynote got AppleScript access (as was pointed out), so I am optimistic.
I think this version of Numbers is intended to focus on the new user interface, which is, IMHO, wonderful. It is different from Excel's user interface in the same way the Mac OS user interface is different from that of Windows. Mind you, I use Excel a lot, and have written some powerful macros in it, but I am using Numbers every chance I get because I enjoy it.
