iMovie 08 - only one Sound-channel with Panasonic hdc-sd1

Hi to all,

i have got a great Probem with iMovie 08 and my AVCHD Camcorder Panasonic hdc-sd1. The import operation works fine, but I only have sound on the right speaker (right sound channel). On the left channel the sound is very quiet. You can see it also in the visual channel indicator in iMovie. It is no problem of the balance settings of my iMac. iMovie imports the data with these sound problems.

If I look my records on my tv, all is ok. Both sound channels are identical loud.

Can anybody tell me, how I fix that problem?

Greetings Michel

I purchased mac1080hd and it is slow. I found that plugging in your SD HC card into a SanDisk micromat was faster for importing.

Since mac1080hd is made for copy to hdd, then convert, that is nice but you can't access your footage on the computer near as fast but I guess that is not what the software was intended for as it states firmly and plainly on their website.

So, overall, mac1080hd is good but my movies are showing up in white so I am not real pleased with it at the moment.

At the moment I am also testing two Sony camcorders: HDR-SR7E en HDR-CX6EK. The first is officially supported by Apple (iMovie '08 camcorder list) and the other is the latest memory card camcorder by Sony.
Both camcorders have 5.1 sound on board and YES these camcorders cause the same problem in iMovie '08.
There definitely is a 5.1 stereo downmix bug in iMovie '08.

I do hope Apple can and will fix this.

I have a MacBook Pro 2.2 LED model and I can't import from my HDC SD1 either. It will mount on my desktop and shows up correctly in System Profiler but iMovie 7 (08) can't see the HDC SD1 at all. The same camera imports just fine into a new MacBook Core 2 Duo. However that too have the sound balance problem experienced by other users. I wish Steve Jobs hadn't said it was great, because it isn't. I've tried everything, made a new user account, deleted all Quicktime plug-ins. Deleted iMovie 7 and all its cache files /prefs, re-installed iMovie. I've been on the phone to Apple support, they are stumped. I've been into see an Apple Solutions Expert for pro video, they are stumped. Nobody has a clue. I'm about to re-install everything and start from a virgin system. I'll report back.

Still no fix for this issue... I have created a video rant about this issue to illustrate the audio you get from the on camera mic on the hdc-sd1. I think anyone reading this post could use a laugh (although, in the video I am sad) - the video is titled Rantasonic and iScrewy. http://vimeo.com/391515

Take a look at the image in support of the video - you see tons of surround sound options in the audio export, yet all of them are grayed out or otherwise unavailable. Hopefully, a fix is available soon.
