Bose Speaker Static and Hiss

I just bought Bose Companion 3 Series II speakers from the Apple Store and even with the volume turned all the way down I can hear a hiss. At unpredicatable intervals (every 15 seconds or so) there's a louder burst of static (not a pop). I can't hear this when there's music playing, but when I'm not it's very annoying.

I saw a posting about an audio update for a "popping" problem, but the installer wouldn't let me install the patch, probably because my computer is only two days old and already has the right patches.

I'm thinking of returning the speakers because of the noise nuisance, but before I do, can someone explain what's causing the hiss?

I have full surround sound in my room and have this problem (I think). Do you get it at low levels as well? a sort of popping? Make sure the plug is in the right socket! Do the speakers have their own preference pane in System Prefs?

Make sure the device is listed in System Prefs and selected under Output Devices rather than Internal Speakers
