iPhoto 08 can now edit EXIF Capture Date

iPhoto 08 is now able to change the EXIF Capture Date on the original files thru the Photo->Adjust Date and Time menu option. It also changes the Created and Modified date to the same selected date on the original file.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

In addition to the Capture Date iPhoto 08 will write the Title to the IPTC Title field, the original file name to the Headline field, the Comments to the Description field and the keywords to the Keyword field upon exporting. The keywords and titles can be turned of for the export. The others are automatic.

Hi everybody,

I just tried the new iPhoto and also installed the update (7.0.1). iPhoto was updating my database at the first launch and I began changing the EXIF date on some of my photos since that's something I wanted to do for a long time. For example, an event was on 4/6/2005 and some images inside are from 1/1/2001 since there were several cameras used and one of them had its date set wrong.
Now to my problem which is the reason why I searched & found this thread:

I changed the date and time successfully and also checked the box to make the changes to the originals. Before continuing I wanted to make sure that everything works fine. So I created a 2nd iPhoto database by launching iPhoto again with the alt key. I imported the event into this empty database by dragging and dropping it from the Finder. To my surprise all my changes are gone as if I never made any, the year 2001 images were all back! So I created another database, but this time I went to my original database and did a drag & drop of all the event's images to a folder on my Desktop. Importing this folder to my empty database results in my changes being retained!

Why is this happening? Could it be that it's because I had my previous iPhoto set to NOT copy the photos into the Library when importing them?

Thanks
Björn

Even better, it reads all those fields during import, too, and copies them into the iPhoto database! Very nice.

Björn:

I tried it on an alias library and the "source" files on the external HD did have their Capture Date changed. How did you get the files from the original (alias based) library into the other?

Sorry for "hijacking" this thread, I found the solution. I keep regular backups of my iPhoto Library so I went back to some of them just to try out. The problem is the 2 settings of iPhoto are "colliding". If you have set it to NOT copy your images into the Library when importing (Advanced Preferences), iPhoto creates its normal Library structure, but the "Originals" folder contains aliases to your original files. So when changing the date your original won't get the changes since you "told" iPhoto to not mess with your original files.

Well, since I like the new iPhoto I changed my preferences to copy when importing and all is well. 🙂

Thank you!
Björn

Be warned though that iPhoto 08 will drop exif data (that it does not understand?) from the pictures.
