Read the rules that say an unfinished will not import added audio, effects or transitions.
If you're done with the Project in iMovie 6 you should export it to full quality and all of your audio and effects will be converted.
When I first tried to import my imovie 06 into imovie 08, imovie 08 crashed. I sent the report into apple and found that when I restarted imovie 08 the import completed without 08 crashing. When I reviewed the movie, the audio was not there.
After reviewing "Read the rules" and other related posts, I first looked to the imovie 08 video tutorial on importing imovie 06 projects. It starts off saying how simple this will be; but in the end it adds the caveat that any added audio will not be imported (as well as other things like titles; etc). But all is not lost! You merely have to manually add the audio from within imovie 08. Unfortunately, this is not a practical solution because I have numerous imovie 06 projects some with multiple audios at various places with each movie - in essence a lot of work on my part.
So, I tried QuickTimeKirk's suggestion (wondering why the video tutorial did not mention this). I started imovie 06; shared a full quality quicktime movie and then imported that into imovie 08. When I reviewed the newly created video in imovie 08 at full screen the quality was terrible. The resolution is so bad that it's just not acceptable to me.
I'm very disappointed about not being able to take imovie 06 and fully import into imovie 08. I was hoping that 08 would be an improvement in at least the robustness of 06. But if I cannot import my 06 movies, I'm just going to bail on 08, keep 06 around for my older projects; and use final cut express for newer projects (and so far I'm very impressed with final cut express :)). And, I'll see if I can get my $ back for ilife 08 - which is really a drag because I've been so impressed with apple/mac (coming recently from windows/linux land). Maybe in someways, apple is really not so different after all. 😟
