4.1 Speaker System?

I know that to use a 5.1 surround sound system on an Intel iMac, you need to use an external sound card. However, I was wondering if I could use a set of 2.1 speakers and a subwoofer and place the speakers behind me to use as a 4.1 speaker system combined with the internal speakers. I'm curious to know if this would work and what software (or hardware) I would need to get the 2.1 speakers to act as rear speakers. I'm using Boot Camp with Vista Ultimate, so if you have suggestions, please try to make them account for both Mac OSX and Vista. Vista would be much more helpful considering all my gaming is done in it and thats mainly why I want to do this. Thanks for your help and input.

I don't think so I have a 2.1 sound system.
but if you had a hookup that splits the speakers for 2 more hookups that could work my system came with one just in case I wanted to add more speakers to it.
and doesn't require a more powerful sound card to do it.
by the way mine is a creative sound system.

What kind of hookup(s) did you use and where might I be able to find them. And do you know of any software that would be able to send the sound of rear speakers into the 2.1 speakers? Thanks

I really don't know where you could find the hookup since it came with my system.
but I could give you afew good ideas.
radio shack.
I bought my sound system at circuit city so maybe they may have something to work.
oh and you don't need any software.
as far as I know you couldn't do that under OSx anyway.
and windows vista picks it up automatically.

So just to clarify, have you tried doing this or are you purely speculating on this idea? And also, what kind of Creative SPeakers were you using? I was looking at the I-trigue ones.

i want 2 upgrade from my mac mini and i want a new design imac but i want to know if the knew imac has built in speakers

I would assume it does because all of the previous iMac models do. And it would not be too smart on Apple's part to not put speakers in it.

those are the ones I have.
the 2.1 version of it.
i've never used it but it's in the manual of the system.
yes the imac does have speakers in it but they don't get that loud though.

Yeah, I figured 85 watts in a tiny speaker like that must sound amazing. Anyways, thanks alot for your help. I'll be sure to ask for those speakers for Christmas.:)
