MacBook Pro battery failure - what next?

One year and 3 days ago, Apple exchanged my MacBook Pro's battery free of charge (because of known problems a particular series of batteries). Out of blue, despite my battery indicator telling me it was fully charged, my laptop just switched itself off. For the next couple of days, it did this on and off until the fault was well and truly entrenched and the ONLY way to use the machine was to have it plugged into mains power. The helpful folk down at Farpoint (in the city of Bath) had a look and sold me another battery (for £98.99, which in itself made me cough slightly), but I really had no choice at that particular point. My concern is that Apple seems to have problems with their batteries and I have now found myself having to spend just under £100 after only using the previous battery for a year (and looking after it in textbook fashion I reckon!). I've downloaded all the programmes/patches but none of these have made a difference. Perhaps this is 'just one of those things', but so very very disappointing when the MacBook Pro is otherwise such a fabulous machine... Is there anything else I can do, or am I to expect the same thing to happen in another year?

Hi,
I'm having the exact same issues...although my new battery (the replacement) is less than a year old. Late last week it started shutting down intermittently and as of today it shuts down as soon as the power adapter is disconnected.
I just came on to the forums to see if there were any solutions and immediately saw your post. I've calibrated my battery regularly...latest firmware and battery update etc. etc.
What a drag...if you hear of any solutions let me know and I'll do the same for you. I'm hoping I don't need to drop the cash for a new battery.

New battery policy can be found here:

http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/

here is a bit of what it says...

For MacBook and MacBook Pro systems with Intel Core Duo processors, this program extends repair coverage on the battery _for up to two years_ from the date of purchase of the computer.

Identifying an affected battery

Affected batteries will have one or more of the following symptoms:

Battery is not recognized causing an “X” to appear in the battery icon in the Finder menu bar.
Battery will not charge when computer is plugged into AC power.
Battery exhibits low charge capacity/runtime when using a fully charged battery with a battery cycle count (as shown in System Profiler) of less than 300.
Battery pack is visibly deformed.

so give AppleCare a call and see if you can get your battery replaced.

Good luck,
frank

Life someone going to Alcoholic Anonymous (from my massive experience of watching folk doing this in the movies!), it's very good to know that 'we are not alone when suffering'... It was VERY helpful to discover that the battery warranty should be TWO years now (because my local Apple dealer certainly did not know that).

All I have to do now is find the best way of contacting AppleCare!

I will post back a result as soon as I get it, and look forward to writing 'solved' instead of just 'helpful' (do you then get a free holiday in Bermuda?!).

Just to keep you fine people up to date, I went back to the Apple store in my local town (Farpoint in Bath), gave them all the gen that Frank had supplied (such as the fact that there could well be a 2-year guarantee on these batteries instead of the usual 1), and the boss-boy there said 'Aha - we will look into this for you and get back to you'. A week has gone by, and I've heard nothing as yet, but I would like to believe they are trying as best they can. As soon as I get 'a result', one way or the other, I shall leave another note. What does this all prove thus far? That a forum like this can prove more helpful than Apple themselves, at least initially, but then I guess I might be expecting too much when computer 'issues' can be so very very diverse. At the very least, I would hope that Apple would wish to take back my 'old' battery, and investigate its problem closely (it seems frustrating to press that little button on the back of the battery, which tells me it's fully charged and, when it's plugged into my laptop, it still shows fully charged and yet within seconds of disconnecting the external power supply, everything switches off).

Frank - by the way, what number do you call Apple on?

Helicon,

I am in the USA thus call:
1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273)

I hope that I am not showing my ignorance but I believe Bath is in England (right?). So you would be calling:
United Kingdom (44) 0870 876 0753 www.apple.com/uk/support.

It is just too bad that you have to go thru such a hassle to get your battery which is definitely under warranty.

If I was you I would call AppleCare and speak to Customer Relations. Tell them what youre going thru trying to get a bad battery replaced and again point to their own guarantee. I would ask for not only a new battery but a refund on the battery you were forced to buy. I have gotten an extra free battery after such a mess up. Tell them this support is unacceptable.

Good luck in your case.

frank

p.s. Thanks for the Golden Star!

SUCCESS!

Today, I have finally received a credit-card refund for £98.99 from my local Apple store. I gave them back the 'old' battery and have been able to keep the new one I originally had to buy from them.

None of this would have been possible without your advice in these Discussion pages. And the need to be persistent. Staff who I had been dealing with 'went on holiday' (delays), then Apple apparently lost all sight of the order and denied all knowledge of the reference numbers my local store had with them (more delays, and no love lost between the store and its supplier at Apple I can tell you!), but we got there in the end. In fact, the guy I had been dealing with was even on his day off, but accessing his account remotely from wherever he was as one does, and we got there in the end.

What a saga. What a victory for 'the little guy', made 'big' thanks to good advice from people like Frank. *THANK YOU.* From what you have been saying about your own experiences with batteries, it probably won't be long before I will have to replace even the new one I have now got but, for the moment, I am smiling on this glorious sunny day in England!
