chapter markers a little bit off

I really like the improvements in iDVD, especially the "professional" quality compression, which looks fantastic.

I am having a problem, however, with chapter markers. I have tried twice now, opening and burning an old iDVD project, and also creating a new project from the same iMovie 6 movie project, and both have several chapters off by a fraction of a second to about 2 seconds.

It works perfectly in the iDVD preview, and the movie itself, so I'm guessing it is some minor bug in iDVD.

Anybody else experienced this? any fixes?

Yes, this is definitely happening. I've double-check my markers (done in Final Cut Pro) in Quicktime. They're fine. This V7 release of iDVD is really poor. After fighting through those ridiculous install problems, I now have to uninstall and get V6 back because I require absolute precision in my markers. I am not a happy bunny. Apple's software test must be sorely wanting if users uncover bugs like these in a matter of minutes.

Very disappointing to a loyal supporter.

This is huge problem. I have lost 2 days of work to this inexcuseable bug.
The new features in iDVD '08 are fantastic, but this makes is useless.
Now I have to reinstall the old version, download updates, re-export two long Quicktime clips, completely re-author two complex projects, and re-render them both.
All because of sloppy beta testing (or are we beta testing right now)?

This is the first time I can remember that Apple has taken such a huge fall in terms of an "upgrade" to their software. I've also noticed that the chapter discrepancy gets worse and worse the further into the movie you go. At the beginning my chapters are fine, but then each chapter gets progressively worse. In my case, I can live with it since I'm only doing some home videos and the chapter gets me in the general vicinity, but I can't imagine how someone who has to master important DVDs could use this upgrade.

Maybe a little less work in pricing iPhones and a little more work beta testing is in need here...

I reported this to Apple as a bug last night because its getting to me. The further into the movie, the more its off, by as much as 12 or 13 seconds (not frames). I've tried deleting transitions in both iMovie6 and iDVD button settings, following the "rules" for chapter markers in iMovie6, different themes in iDVD, all the same result. The longer the movie or the more chapters, the worse it gets.

iMovie6 into iDVD8 is a rescue from the limitations of iMovie8, but this gets in the way of all the nice improvements in iDVD8 such as alignment of chapter buttons and "Professional" quality encoding.

Really hope this is a genuine bug and not an effort to get more StudioPro sales!!! ???

Perhaps it is because I have been cheap and haven't seen the need to pour hundreds of dollars into upgrades since FCP3 and DVDsp 2, but DVDsp 2 has no problem importing chapter markers from FCP3 and putting them exactly where I intend.

Certainly, if I wish to fiddle with CMs once they are in DVDsp they are not a precise, but I believe in DVDsp the restriction is to every 15 frames, but not to GOP.

By the same token, as we all know, iDVD06 has no problem doing the same placing CMs where intended. Although they totally rewrote iMovie 08, iDVD should not be missing important parts, and folk are quite right to be miffed that CMs are missing.

I think it is well within reason to expect iDVD to recognize CMs from iM06, Garageband, FCE, or whatever source one uses for CMs (even if it is a correctly-designed iM08).

After all, Mr. Jobs hasn't seen fit to tick off his RICH customers who apparently also haven't gotten his message that the DVD is antiquated and past its useful life, and continue to use FCP Suite to (gasp) burn DVDs with CMs.

As for your rather flippant "that's what DVDsp is for" -- how does one come up with a current copy of DVDsp without paying $1300 for the FCP Suite?

Sorry, Shippey, but iDVD is for "important" projects, too.

Sorry Clyde,

I still say if you are looking to create DVD masters for customers, you should be using DVD SP!!! iDVD just has too many limitations.

The iLife '08 applications represent an entirely new way of doing lots of things (and new places to look for doing the things we've ben doing). The latest round of iLife '08 updates have apparently fixed many of the problems people have been having -- but software is never finished... there are ALWAYS more bugs to be fixed and features to add.

F Shippey,

Actually, I can see how the wording "master important DVDs" could be misinterpreted. I guess you interpreted it as "mastering for replication", but my interpretation is that when he sez "master" he merely means "author the first one".

No matter which is correct, my guess is that if he were "mastering" according to your definition, he would already be using FC Suite and we wouldn't have heard from him.

That's the reason I considered your statement to be somewhat flippant. It implies that "oh, well just stop using iDVD and just go pick up a copy of DVDsp, instead."

There are all manner of "important DVDs", and iDVD produces a fine product for many levels, which probably satisfies many a customer even with all its limitations.

I apologise as well, but I just found it out of place to suggest what tool someone should use for their product when you don't even know what the product, or its purpose, is.

You are certainly correct that DVDsp is a far more professional and versatile tool for a much higherlevel product. But that is also why is it only available included in a $1300 package which is at least half what most iLife users pay for their whole computer systems.

Clyde,

From the comments I've read in this forum over the years, there are many people using iDVD to create DVDs for customers. If it's the person next-store, that's one thing, but some are apparently using iDVD in more commercial applications. iDVD is a great application, and I use it all the time for family DVDs. However, I've been involved the the photo business for many years and would never use it for a commercial product I was charging for - iDVD is just to limited - limited branching options, only PCM audio, etc - there is a long list of limitations. That's what DVD SP is for, as you know.

The iApps are an AMAZING value!! ... but they aren't designed to compete with Final Cut Studio.

For the record, I was very disappointed when Apple decide to only sell DVD SP as part of the FC Studio package (and told the Apple Product Manager so, but that' s another story).
