Fuel Gauge - Chart

Hi

I wonder if it's possible to create a chart that acts like a fuel gauge.

I have measure which needs to be between 80/120% of the target and would like to track the progress like a needle on a fuel gauge.

Anyone have an idea on how I could do this.

PS lets not compare numbers 1.0 to latest excel.

Cheers

This can be done with a pie chart.

1. Type in cell A1: your percentage
2. Type in cell B1: 200-A1
3. Type in cell C1: =A1+B1
4. Highlight the three cells and make a pie chart.
5. Rotate the pie chart 90° so that the value representing cell C1 is a half-moon on the bottom.
6. Remove the title and all of the other text.
7. Make the colour of the half-moon transparent.
8. Explode the two other slices by about 2%
9. Make the two slices the same colour.

10. Tada, there's your needle! Since the two slices don't line up exactly, you might want to mask the whole thing with an outline of a half-moon. That way the circle appears continuous and the bottom is straight.

PS: Let me know how well it goes

Sorry, I used the term "mask" too loosely. I didn't necessarily mean use the mask tool. I just meant:

1. Make a circle. Centre it directly over the pie chart. Make the fill: clear, and the line colour: white (or the same as your background.)
2. Make a box, fill it white and then line it up with the bottom of the fuel gauge.

PS: This little fuel gauge is cool! When I made one, I put the data in a three-celled table, hid the two calculated cells and then assigned a slider to the first cell. Now all I see is one number and the fuel gauge. I slide the slider and I can watch the fuel gauge go up and down. I started thinking .... and then I realized it'd be totally possible for someone to make an analogue clock using this same sort of logic! Might be a fun project for some computer-science students or something.
