MBP hangs on startup if iPod is connected

I recently bought a 2.4 GHz 15" MBP and I've found that whenever I start it up with my iPod already connected, it hangs. The video iPod is attached via USB and it only allow the MBP to go so far as a grey screen. Within seconds of disconnecting the iPod, the MBP progresses to the Apple logo and completes starting up.

Does anyone know if this is a fault or normal?
