Optical/Super drive tries to eject phantom disc?

Every time I start up my MBP it sounds like it's trying to eject a disc, even if there isn't one loaded. I've noticed it also does it whenever I load disc burning software (eg toast, popcorn etc).

It's an unpleasant sound but I'm fairly sure it's just the drive trying to eject something that isn't there. Anyone have an idea why it might be doing that?

MBP 2.4 GHz 15", Mac OS X (10.4.10)

They all do it, as part of the start up sequence ... checking if there's an OS Boot volume in there.
