Can you download Java or Shockwave onto the iPhone?

No, the iPhone doesn't currently support Java or Shockwave or Flash, for that matter.

You can't download these from a web page because the iPhone doesn't use the same type of processor that PCs and Macs use so the binary code you'd download from a web page would be incompatible with the iPhone's processor.

You can go to some sites that have alternate coding.

For example, for weather, you can go to http://iweathr.com/iweathr/ for weather radar -- it gives you an animated image, but doesn't use flash, javacode, or Shockwave.

There are just some things the iPhone will not do, though. It's not unique to the iPhone -- a LOT of smartphones won't accomodate streaming media either.

Actually, the iPhone HAS Java...it doesn't have JavaCode, which permits some types of flash animation.

Also flash animation is handled by a completely separate virtual machine created by MacroMedia (now Adobe). While flash programs can access some JavaScript primitives, they have almost no access to the Java virtual machine on browsers that support it.
