Trying to do simple cuts in imovie

Please bear with me as I'm having trouble finding documentation on this very simple task that I want to do.

In imovie HD, I would drag clips on the timeline, put the marker where I want to split it, and select "split video clip at playhead". I would do this to put specific scenes together with no special effects, just straight cuts.

I'm finding the imovie 8 interface a bit complicated, especially the way when I drag a movie into the project, it separated it with all the little boxes in the timeline, as opposed to the clips that I used to drag that were timed as I wanted them to be in imovie HD.

Is there a simple way to accomplish what I am trying to do?

Hey macgurl88,

I just literally found out how to do it while editing my own movie 🙂

what you have to do is, on the storyboard (ie, the events window - bottom right by default), reject parts of the clip you don't need (make your selection of the clip you don't need using the yellow rectangle thing, and right click _. *reject selection*), and then drag the selection to the project view (top left)..

Make sure you are hiding your rejected clips though.

Hope that makes sense

follow Clint's advice given here:

... I think, we Ol' iM Users have to axe some habitual rituals...
the User Interface is VERY different, e.g. what you see, is not 'clips' ... I would call it 'stripes of film' ...

.. think different, and iM-EZ allows 'simple cuts' with a charme... 🙂

in addition:
using Clint's workflow, you can very easiely add many parts from a single 'clip'/import or, repeatedly same part of a clip at many positions in your project .. in iMHD you had to do that ctrl-mouse 'trick' ...

thanks everyone - I ended up spending the weekend fooling around with the software, reading this board and watching the tutorial videos - I think I have a pretty good grasp of how to do what I need to do for my never ending project.

I know a lot of people are complaining about this compared to imovie 6, but now that I understand what I am doing this is absolutely perfect for me. I'm very glad that I made the upgrade.
