The videos are about 10 seconds long. They're short clips from a football game. Nothing wrong with my internet connection or ports as far as I know. Other sites work fine. I even tried uploading the file manually (exported as movie to desktop) and had the same issue.
I'm having a similar problem... although i don't make it to where it says my video has uploaded. I'm trying to upload a project i made today in iMovie '08, directly within the program to YouTube. I signed in and authorized the uploading, and filled in the info for YouTube. It says it's going to be about 16 min's to upload. When it gets to the end of the upload, it says that YouTube has sent back something that it can't understand. And that's it... nothing happens... no new video on YouTube or anything!
I tried it 3 times now... and it's the same thing everytime... i have a really fast connection. I don't get it.
Has anyone else been able to upload to YouTube directly within the program? Not just exporting and then uploading that.
I have successfully uploaded about 20 clips to YouTube with iMovie 08, so this leads me to think there is either a problem with your mac, your youtube account, the video you are trying to upload.
I would suggest the following things to help narrow down the problem.
1a) upload the same video from a different mac
1b) upload the same video from the html interface (not iMovie 08)
2) upload a different video to youtube (from a different camera any new source.. try to make it over 1min and under 6min and if your mac has an isight camera just record something with it as a test)
3) create a new youtube account, sign in and authorise 3rd party access again, try the new clip you created and the old one...
if you can perform any of these tests, it will greatly help forum users to suggest a fix, if you don't find one yourself in the process
I will try some of these when i get home later tonight...
1a) How would i try the same video on another mac? Would i have to transfer all of the event files that are stored in the imovie library folder in the <User>/Movies?
1b) I have uploaded to YouTube before through their HTML way, and this question is more specifically for uploading directly from iMovie.
2) I did try uploading another imovie, and got the same result. I also read that there's a problem with YouTube when re-uploading something, and it suggested changing the length of the movie because YouTube sometimes confuses the two... i tried that as well, and had the same result.
3) Not sure if i want to try making another account just for this purpose.
I think it must have something to do with my connection... possibly a firewall issue or some such thing, which i don't understand because i get through all of the steps... it just has a problem in completing after 100% of the upload... it's the communication that comes back from YouTube that iMovie doesn't understand. I will try to post a screenshot of the error message when i get a chance.
I tried making a clip with Quicktime from the iSight, and i imported that... added a title, and uploaded that... and it worked. The only thing i did different was i left the aspect ratio on 4:3 as opposed to the other video which was 16:9. So now i set the previous movie i had to 4:3 to see if that will make a difference. I know that YouTube videos are 4:3. If there's a problem with uploading 16:9 iMovie projects to YouTube, there should be some warning message about it or something... why can't the video just go widescreen with letterboxing... fit to the YouTube standard 4:3.
Not sure if this has anything to do with it... i'm trying to reupload the project now... 30 mins to go... i'll check it in the morning.
Aspect ratio is not a problem for YouTube. The vast majority of the videos I upload to YouTube are in 16:9 aspect ratio and they're all fine. YouTube should automatically letterbox any 16:9 videos.
One thing I cannot abide is when YouTube videos are squished or squashed. Like when someone exports a 16:9 (widescreen) video as 4:3 (fullscreen), which makes everything look too long and skinny. This is especially common with videos made with Windows Movie Maker, because that application defaults at 4:3 and not everyone knows that they need to change the settings if their video is actually 16:9. Fortunately, iMovie seems to be far more intuitive and it seems like it's a lot harder (especially in iMovie 08) to create a video in the wrong aspect ratio.
Anyway, don't mess with the aspect ratio. I realize that some people aren't so sensitive to altered or changed aspect ratio (which results in stretched or squashed picture) but it really looks BAD for the rest of us. (I'm not saying that you have done this, srammij, but your post just reminded me of this issue.)
I have uploaded 4 videos directly from iMovie'08 the last two days without any problem,
http://www.youtube.com/rodkar . I did fail in my first attempt, which really sounds stupid. Anyway, I will share with you just in case you have made the same silly mistake. The reason I failed in my first attempt was I had separated tags with commas instead of space in the youtube publishing box.
Hello again, sorry about the delay with my response but I'm a busy guy ha ha. It seems like you have done some or most of the tests I suggested. The fact that a movie made from the iSight seems to upload through the iMovie software with no problem, leads me to think that there is an issue with the content you are trying to upload. (What that problem is I can't be sure) But just to eliminate one thing, 16:9 is not a problem. Many of my iMovie 08 uploads to YouTube have been Widescreen.
Movies over 10 minutes even upload fine but are rejected and don't appear on your account. So length should not be an issue.
It does sound like either there is something funky in your movie (which I do not suspect but is possible.) or like you suggested a weird internet compatibility thing.
