iPod Won't Update or Restore

Help, this has been driving me nuts! I have been reading all the posts on this subject and nothing has worked! I've changed drive letters, turned off firewall, disabled anti-virus, updated drivers, updated my dll's, have the most recent iTunes, changed USB ports and disconnected all USB devices. I still cannot update iPod from 1.1.1 to 1.3.1, I get a 1417 Error. I try to use current version to Restore and I get a "cannot restore because files are in use by another application".

Does anybody have any advice or other tricks that I can try?

Dell Latitude 610, Windows XP Pro

Have you tried all of the suggestions from this article?

Error 1415, 1417, 1418, or 1428: Cannot restore or update iPod in iTunes 7 or later

Also, the technique in this post might be worth a try:

iTunes7 & 5th gen iPod updating - is this possible solution? (winXP)

Thank you so much for the link, the second one cured my update issue. Unfortunately, I still have the file in use error when I try to restore.

I got it! For my file in use issue, I had to restart after I was able to Update, the restore went through without any issue.

One note, you have to catch the proceedure just right so it takes, so if you have the same problem, try it several times.

If you continue to get the "file in use" message, check the settings on ALL of your antivirus/antispyware software and make sure in preferences they are set not to scan iPods.
