What is my computer worth today?

How much do you think my Power Mac G5 is worth?

*Power Mac G5*
Rev A

Processor:
Dual 1.8GHz Power PC G5

Memory:
4.5GB DDR400 (PC3200) RAM

Hard Drive:
160GB Serial ATA
300GB Serial ATA

Optical Drive:
Super Drive (DVD-R/CD-RW)

Graphics Support:
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

BlueTooth:
BlueTooth Module included

Airport:
Airport Extreme Card included

I'm not trying to sell it. Delta Airlines crushed it. I would understand that the plane might sway and might hit the computer, I understand that it might be thrown into the plane, I understand that it might be tossed into the the cart and all that. What I don't understand is how does a well packaged, 60lb, stable-cube-of-a-box with fragile stickers gets thrown off and ran over with the luggage transport? I would think it's their responsibility at that point. Carelessness.

Just need to know how much it's worth. Stripped down with 1GB, no Airport, and no 300GB HD, originally sold for $2,884 back then.
I estimated $2,500 today.

What do you think?

Any help would help so so much. Thank you all!

Hello! THIS guide indicates the machine is worth about $1380.00 but I'm sure it was worth a lot more to you. I would talk to my insurance agent and press my case hard against the airline. Tom

Hi Bryant-

Bummer that!

Tom is right-your system is worth about 1/2 of what you estimate.

I have battled with airlines before. Like most insurance situations, they may wave a check in front of you fairly quickly. The game on your part requires you to stand your ground and push back. Firm yet polite!

The sad part is that you may be without a machine for a while if you are waiting on the check to cover it.

Is it something that your homeowner's insurance might cover? It is always worth checking.

Luck-

I was thinking $2,500 would buy you a brand new 2.66GHz Mac Pro with four cores direct from Apple, but then perhaps that wouldn't be unreasonable, at least with a new for old insurance policy. On release I think the dual 1.8GHz Rev A PowerMac G5 was the mid range model, not unlike the Mac Pro today in it's default configuration. In 'normal' terms though, the G5 is probably worth half that amount.

I took in a lot of consideration of what this whole thing caused me to do.

I didn't add that that as soon as I heard it was crushed, me and my partner wasted no time to find a replacement computer for the job we were working on. We ended up buying a Mac Pro and finished the After Effects job using a 1GB stick of RAM (which I dreaded throughout the whole project).

I went ahead and sent a letter to Delta Corporate and asked for about $4,500 in damages and replacement parts. I need two new drives (the work in there is priceless, it has years of design work) and other parts in which costs me more money to replace.

There is a typed up story if anyone wants to take a gander at. It's at http://www.orangeglue.com/delta - I made it with iWeb 08' (it came with the Mac Pro, I wanted to see what the hype was about and man, Apple adds a bunch of code to make a simple site like that function, but it's understood since it's a WYSIWYG) I posted Pictures as well.

Anyways, I'm still working with a 1GB chip and man it *****. I can't wait any longer for the response from Delta, so I'm deciding to buy new RAM now but am having difficulty. I added a new thread for that http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1111785 - With Delta, I'm hoping it get's reimbursed.

Thanks everyone for your responses!

I'll keep this thread up to let you know on Final Details on what went on with my G5 and the Corporate People of Delta and how they treated this situation.
