Iphone compatiblity with 2005 Audi

Has anyone been successful, using bluetooth, to pair their iPhone with a 2005 Audi? I was able to pair my phone for a couple of weeks, at times having issues and having to re-pair the car and phone. Now I am unable to get the car to recognize the phone. I have had no luck getting info from Apple and the Audi dealer, after checking out my car says that there is a software issue with 2005 Audi Bluetooth and Audi is working on new software. They were unable to explain why my connection worked for the first couple of weeks. Has anyone else experienced this problem or had luck pairing iPhone with a 2005 Audi?

First: how did you manage to get the 2007 MMI version for you 2005 A6?

I've found iPhone paring with an Audi (with MMI) is definitely dependent on the year/model. I have a 2005 (and a half -- has the new grill) A6 3.2. iPhone has 1.0.2 upgrade. No BT dropouts. Calls out from car's directory are OK. Incoming calls OK (even shows some incoming caller info). Phonebook choice on Audi driver's display shows it transferred only the AT&T services stuff (see settings/phone/AT&T services on the iPhone) but none of my contacts from the iPhone. On a new A6 in the dealer showroom it appeared to transfer the few contacts I had added at that point plus info on missed calls, etc. (didn't have time to do an exhaustive test) I don't see why if Apple can transfer the AT&T stuff, complete with codes to dial, it can't also do the contacts. I've talked with my Audi dealer (very helpful folks) and they simply say that Audi has told them there are so many phones coming out that it's hard to keep up. My biggest gripe: if they can do it on a new model, why can't they retro-fit the software into older cars that have bluetooth.

Note: Much the same info posted on NavPlus forum which has good Audi discussions.

In your MMI (Car|Setup) you can check the software version. There's alot of different ones out there but mine is 3460 (I live in Europe, Netherlands) You can definitely check because a 2005 model would have 1200 series firmware and the newer firmware offers the possibility in the phone setup to choose whether you want the SIM memory, the Phone Memory or both. This looks like this would solve your issue.
to check:

- [SETUP] and [RETURN] hold for 2 seconds, however start by pressing the SETUP-key.
- Push the MMI button (Interfacebox is chosen).
- The SW-index shows the software Version.

Thanks for identifying the "Easter Egg" to see all these details...

Looks like I'm at version 1070 dated 08.09.04 (Sep 8, 2004, as I believe they use dd.mm.yy notation).

How do I get the dealer to update it? Looks like all they need is the appropriate CD-ROM that gets loaded via the SW Update button (lower-right next to MMI button when the Current Config is displayed.) I assume there are compatibility issues with version and car model/yr/... , etc. Any suggestions or experience of others would be welcomed.

Tell them you have problems with your BOSE /DSP system for example. Because in the older versions software the settings are not saved properly. If you have the bluetooth carkit tell them you want the nav-system to mute when on the phone, also a new setting. Other new items are:

-louder volume-
-ability to set volume for music during Navigation instructions
-altitude in Nav
-direct access to Top Destinations in Nav
-Bluetooth access to both Phone and SIM memory
-Bluetooth PIN configurable

These are just some items in the European firmware. In combination with the 2007 NAV DVD you will also have 3D BirdView on the NAV which is very cool! The part number in Europe for MMI version 4220 is 4E0 906 961 AA.

Success! or at least partial success.
- After pleading/prodding,... the dealer updated software index for the Interface box to 3300 dated 10.08.06.

- The iPhone contacts now all load to the Phonebook (no choices that I could see) in first name, last name format so they sort on first name even though in the iPhone they sort by last name. ( I haven't tried formatting in the iPhone by Last, first to see what that does. The MMI list included (if space is there) the Work,Main, Home, etc notation from the iPhone in Parens but then strangely follows it with a /W (for Work?). Have to study this a bit more
There is nowhere near enough room on the instrument cluster LED display to show any significant info.... really have to use the MMI

- didn't see a way to change the Bluetooth PIN

- there is a new volume setting for "music while getting nav instructions" (but, luckily, rolling the steering wheel volume knob during Nav still adjusts the Nav volume)

- Not sure what you meant about "altitude in Nav"... I could always see it by going to the Nav Info screen.

- the nav map display options when you push the MMI knob are better: still "force north," zoom in/out, and set destination but moving the cursor now improved with one setting that does up/down, then left/right, (or maybe the other way round) then off with each click. In the extra space they've added a "follow the route" option that is pretty neat.

If I discover more, I'll add to this post.
