privacy shutter

my isight is built into my macbook.

i want to start recording video blogs from isight to imovie.

when i was looking for help it said i needed to turn on the privacy shutter. is the privacy shutter only on isights that aren't built in?

the reason i ask is i don't want to make it possible for other people to be able to view what i'm recording until i edit it. is that even possible?

if i am recording and have ichat open can other people see what i'm recording?

i'd appreciate any help with this. thanks 🙂

The "privacy shutter" statements in your Mac's Help refers to the external iSight like mine. Built-in iSights like yours do not need a separate privacy shutter. As explained in Using your built-in iSight camera, your indicator light shows when iSight is on or off.

Even if your built-in iSight indicator light shows that your camera is on, only some of the applications you can use with iSight can send video anywhere.

iChat, for example, allows you to pause video for privacy or completely disable the camera via menu commands without quitting the application. However, quitting iChat, or any application that is using your iSight turns the iSight off.

In the case of iMovie, you can toggle the record mode on and off with the "Record with iSight" button shown in this picture:

Only people physically there and looking at your display can see what iMovie is recording. You must email or upload your finished iMovie before anyone can see it. Search your Mac's iMovie HD > Help > iMovie HD Help for "Sharing your finished movie" (without the quotation marks) for help with this subject.

As explained in this Apple kbase article, iSight can be used by one application at a time, so you can be confident that nobody is watching you except when you are using your iSight with an application that is sending video somewhere.
