New 5th gen 80gb IPOD not detected by itunes or PC

I have a 4gb IPod mini – this works without any problems on my windows XP PC.

Upgraded to a lovely new 80gb 5th generation iPod video.

*Problem ?*

When I connect the new IPod to the PC, nothing happens.

The IPod does charge up when connected via the USB.

I can see the IPod in the “computer Management” folder under “other devices, IPod
properties show: “The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.”

Tried the 5rs and 4 hours of reading website & internet for help – unfortunately nothing resolved the problem.

Tried two different UBS cables and numerous USB sockets, 4gb mini works fine any way you try it.

Next day called the UK helpline 0870 876 0753 and we removed itunes and reinstalled it – but no change.

They arranged for me to drop off the IPod at an Apple service centre and 8 days later I picked a new replacement IPod, but I still have exactly the same problem and IPod does not connect to the PC or itunes.

I tried calling the helpine, but after 45min on hold I was cut off at 19:57 as they close at 8pm.

Surely this cannot be two faulty IPods in a row ?

I hope the problem lies somewhere in a PC software issue and I would appreciate any help on this one ?

Thanks.

It could be two in a row, but I'm betting it is your computer. Did you let windows replace your USB Root driver? Try to see if there are updated ones for your computer but even if there are none read the last part of this article and update your driver:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136

You also need to use a rear port on your computer and make sure your mini is not connected. You could also be getting a drive collision: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499 Be sure to disconnect all other USB devices except for your iPod, keyboard and mouse and try a much higher letter, such as M or P or Z. If you are on a network disconnect before doing this.
