iphone won't ask to join a wifi network

I have my phone set to join a network if one is detected, but it won't. If I go to a place where I know there is a network, it won't pop up a message asking me if I want to join. I have to go into the wifi settings menu and only then will it show there is the network and I have to tap on the network to join it.

anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it?

Hate to speak for Jonathan, but in my case, it seems to happen on my home WI-FI network but that is probably because I turn WI-FI off when I leave the house to conserve the battery. I know the network is configured properly because when I go into settings, to turn WI-FI on, I can, and it works fine. In my case, I have reset the phone and I am using the latest software 1.02.

Hi All....

I am having the same troubles. This seemed to happen after I did the 1.0.2 update. Things were working fine before. I have tried everything suggested above with the exception of the reset/restore. This happens in accessing ANY access point that has been saved in my phone. I can manually connect fine, but once the iphone "locks" itself, it is defaulted back to the EDGE network and I have to manually select an access point again.

I have also found my iPhone to "stop responding" quite a bit since I have done the last update. Eventually it will start to respond and work again. Anyone else have this happening??

Thanks!

Vern

Thanks for the tip Jason, unfortunately, it didn't help. There has been an interesting development though. I went to the apple store yesterday. Didn't have enough time to wait for the genius bar but talked to one of the sales people. While in the store, my phone would always come back on to Wi-Fi as it is supposed to. Even when I turned the power off then back on, it found the Wi-Fi network on its own and went to it instead of Edge. When I came home, no dice. Same old problem. I'm at a bit of a loss because my phone will connect to my network only if I select it. It won't automatically do it. I have a Belkin F5D7230-4 router, not sure if that matters.

So, I think I solved my problem but I'm not too sure what did it. Checked out a few other posts and I saw some settings for static Wi-Fi settings. Entered them but that didn't seem to solve the problem. I then forced the iPhone to forget the network a couple of times, then selected it again and for some reason, I think my phone's amnesia has been cured! It is once again a joy to play with YouTube around the house!
