smtp and Iphone

the only way i can get outgoing mail to work on my Iphone
is to use the att cwmx.com:25 smtp server - but that only works when on the Edge network

i would like to use the yahoo smtp server so i can send mail when im on wifi - i want to configure it to let me send email for my work account - sending email from my yahoo account works fine

i dont seem to be able to use my work smtp server since it wants TLS security and it the Iphone only supports SSL

does anyone know the configuration for setting up the yahoo smtp server so it will allow sending email from a non yahoo id

ive tried

smtp.mail.yahoo.com:25
smtp.mail.yahoo.com:587

ive put in my yahoo id and password - ive tried it with ssl for outgoing mail both on and off

nothing seems to work

i would prefer ssl if its possible so the outgoing mail is secure

cwmx.com is on port 25 so i dont think its doing any kind of security - and as i said will only work when on the EDGE network

thanks

IPhone, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

i had similar issues, i had to use cwmx.com for sending mail on edge, and on wifi i would use a different outgoing (which never worked)
the funny thing is, after trying this server and that server.. i accidentally realized that if i just left the outgoing mail server to the default smtp.example.com it would send on both edge and wifi.

obviously i had to input the correct incoming server to receive the mail..

needleman_mark,

Many networks filter port 25 traffic because of port 25 traffic has been abused by people sending unsolicited bulk email (aka spam).

The iPhone in some situations will try other common ports, many of which will require authentication.

If you are using an outgoing mail server that requires authentication on a port besides port 25 it should work on both WiFi and EDGE in most situations. The exception would be on networks that filter traffic on all ports as a security major, such as some work environments.

This article includes more information on outgoing mail:

Hope this helps,

thnaks

i already had read the 1st article - the second seems to do with isp email accounts you want to be setup as yahoo push email

my problem is not with my yahoo personal mail id - that works fine for sending and receiving mail

its my work email i cant get to send fro unless i use cwmx.com which only works on EDGE

my work smtp server seems to want TLS security (it wont allow non secure email) and it doesnt support SSL - while the iphone wants SSL or no security

what im hoping to be able to do is figure out a way of using the yahoo smtp sever for my work email address so i can send email on both EDGE and wifi - but no configuration i have tried

smtp.mail.yahoo.com:25
smtp.mail.yahoo.com:587

with my yahoo id and password configured in

ssl on for outgoing mail ssl off for outgoing mail

seems to let me connect to the yahoo mail server and send mail on my work account

that sort of worked using smtp.gmail.com:465 with my gmail id sent mail on both EDGE and wifi - but the from address was my gmail id even though i have my work email address in the Account Information section

do you know if i can configure the gmail smtp server so it sends out the mail but uses my work email address as the from field

thanks

im probably being really stupid but i dont see those options about always using the address in the account settings

i see where i can set my default eail address

but what i want (if possible) is to use my work email when i send mail from it and my yahoo mail when i send mail from it

in Advanced settings i see

Sent messages
Deleted mailbox
Deleted messages
Settings (for when ssl is used
Authentication
IMAP Prefix path

but not what you mentioned - unless im missing something

I suggest you try www.Authsmtp.com. Detailed directions are available on the site.

They have a service that will provide authenticated smtp outgoing mail and the recipient will see your actual e-mail address as the sender.

It costs $24/year, but it can be used for multiple e-mail accounts and multiple devices (say, both iphone and laptop) so you never have to use webmail when traveling.

There is a 14 day period in which you can cancel, so you can prove to yourself that it works before you are committed for a year.

Thanks to everyone who helped

i setup an acount with authsmtp.com and that worked - they are a very helpful group of people

but i also discovered by reading Iphone: The Missing Manual (you can order this from O'Reilly)

if you have a gmail account you can use

smtp.gmail.com:465 (with ssl on for outgoing mail)

from the web interface www.gmail.com you can setup gmail to
send outgoing mail from another email address

so i was able to get a free smtp server that works with my iPhone to send outgoing mail using my work email adress as the from field

gmail can be set to always use the alternative email address or use the address incoming mail was sent to so if email was sent to you gmail address replies will come back from your gmail address

i may keep the authsmtp account as a backup - it was only $24 for a year but that does have a limit of 1,000 outgong email messages a month (probably not a problem for me)- the $24 a year also entitles you to setup up to 10 email addresses it will send mail for - but the limit is still 1,000 a month - they have plans that cost more that increase that limit

yes but you dont d it on the iphone

on the phone set you stp server to be

smtp.gmail.com:465

ad your gmail userid and password

set outgoing mail to use SSL

logon to gmail at

mail.google.com

in the upper right corner is a label called settings

click on that then click on the Accounts label

there is a box Send Mail as

add the email address you want the email to come from

gmail will send you an email with a confirmation nuber - type that into the box that pops up

you have a choice to set which email address you want as your default and also if it should always send email as that address

or

Reply from the same address the mail was sent to

so mail sent to your gmail address is replied to from your gmail address - mail sent to your other address is replied to with that address

you can add multiple email addresses but it doessnt say what the limit is

if you have your own domain name there is a link that says you an use certain google apps with you own domain name - i dont have one so i havent tried it -
