iPhone & AOL Instant Messenger

I have thought from the beginning that the SMS application on the iPhone would only work for phone to phone text messages. I was wrong.

Today, I received a string of IMs from a friend of mine on AOL! I didn't think it was possible, but then I remembered that I am set up on AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) so that if I am not signed on using my PC, the system will send IMs to my cell phone. I used to do this with my Treo. But I didn't think it would work with my iPhone.

What's even better is that I was able to respond back to him on AOL by texting him from my iPhone! Alright!

Yes, when you are logged on AIM it will stop sending you SMS messages. You set up the feature on the Mobile AIM site and register your phone with your S/N. You can also configure timeframes to automatically turn forwarding on or off, if you don't want to be bombared with messages while sleeping or at work 🙂 You can also configure custom "Mobile" buddy lists so only select people can message you while You're mobile.

You are right, of course, but the neat thing is... Now I have a "conversation" session on my iphone with my friend on AOL. I can pull up that conversation stream and initiate a new SMS message to my friend any time, and I will really be sending it to him on AOL.
