Print Selection Only

When will we ever get a PRINT SELECTION ONLY to be in the main print dialogue box? Windows has had this forever and it just peeves me to imagine the PC guy up there in the commercial teasing MAC about the subject.

iMAC, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

There are freeware Services that can do that, but only for applications that support Services. They may not work for Intel Macs.

The problem is a difference in philosophy between Windows and Macintosh. Windows will make assumptions about what you want to print. Macintosh will not, so you need a format in which to print. I think this reflects the text-only heritage of Windows from DOS, which the Macintosh has never had.

I understand the philosophy and I love what the MAC can do. It's just frustrating that there is something the PC can do that we can't with just our standard printing dialogue box, something Windows has done virtually from the start. I want to select text and pictures and whatever.... by highlighting and then print that selection only. How difficult is that?

I was just in firefox and didn't see any print selection option in the print dialogue box within the program.

Load a web page in Firefox and highlight the selection you want to print. Choose the Print option from the File menu in the menu bar or use the keyboard shortcut command-P. This will bring up a print window. There is a pop-up menu that defaults to Copies & Pages. When you use this pop-up menu, you will see the name of the application Firefox. Select that item. The print window will now show the options for Firefox. The "Print Selection Only" is the first option listed. All you need to do is to check the box. Then click print.
