Can't name an event in iPhoto 7.0.1, workaround?

I just installed iLife '08, then I ran software update which updated iPhoto to 7.0.1. Then I rebooted. Then I launched iPhoto '08 for the first time and upgraded the library.

Now I'm trying to name events, but it won't let me! I click below the event and a text box comes up, but I can't get the cursor to show up inside it. Trying to type just gives me the error beep.

If I double click on an event and then click on "Untitled Event" at the top of the screen, the same thing happens. The text box shows up, but no matter what I can't type into it.

How do I name my events???

I should point out that I also have iLife '08 at home on a C2D (white plastic) iMac, but I can name events there just fine.

Nathan:

Launch Font Book, locate the Helvetica Neue font and deactivate it. Then reactivate it. Launch iPhoto and try again.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Hi,

I had this problem with a week old iMac and spent 50 minutes on the phone with applecare support - they couldn't fix it.

However, 10 minutes on this forum provided the answer. The Helvetica neue font had been deleted (do not know how - happened while I was using iPhoto) from my account. I searched for it on my computer and found it in on the system, double clicked it and then clicked install. After this iPhoto was back to normal.

There must be something in iPhoto that deletes this font somehow - I am far from a computer expert and do not mess with such things as fonts myself!

Thanks for everyone's help on this subject.

I wouldn't mess around with sudo, chown and chmod in my system. It may be necessary only if you delete the font cache files via command line in the Terminal.

From the Finder:
If you go to /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/
you will see folders like "System", "501" and others if you have multiple users.
Each folder has a fonts.db file.
Simply Cmd-delete to put it in the trash, you'll have to authenticate with your username/password
Then Restart, empty trash and launch iPhoto.

The first two lines change the owner and access privileges for the content of the Fonts folder. Not sure why this is necessary.
