whenever i get a text now, it does not make a noise. none of the sounds besides the ringtone work. i have tried reseting it and when i press on and off on the settings it does not make a sound either. do i need to get a new phone? or is there some way to fix it?
HELP!
You have done all the basic fixes, Only thing left is to do a full restore from itunes then next, I would suggest calling 1-800-myiphone and ask for a more technical answer. what you have done so far is the best solutions posted on this board to date that I have seen, time to consult the genius bar IMHO

I had same problem it was the lock button above the volume control that i must have hit to the lock position.Of course did not notice it until i did a full restore hope this helps
I had the exact same problem, even the speaker at the top of the unit (the one your ear is by) does not work. I tried a soft reset (holding home and sleep button), which did nothing and then did a full restore, still nothing. I went to my local apple store and the genius there asked if I minded if he did a restore at the bar. After the restore finished it still did not work. Immediately he said that it would be sent in and of course covered by warranty. He thinks that it may be the chip that decodes audio (this is what he thought, but who knows). So my iPhone is being shipped for service, for free, and I currently have a loner iPhone, which I was apparently not charged for (not sure if this was a mistake but I think if your phone is being serviced, under the warranty, for a defect they will give you a loner for free). I would suggest that if the problem persists that you either call apple support or go to an apple store. Its all under warranty so you shouldn't need to pay for anything.
Same issue here, will try the headset trick when I can. Apple please fix this, its a real pain in the rear. Especially if you notice it after you have left your house and your at WORK and your headset is at home 😟. Brutal
So here is my take on this problem. I did the plugging in and out thing and it worked. Since then I have NOT pluged them back in and the phone lost its sounds again. Thanks Steve,
I also ran into this issue today (loss of mail notification sound effects).
I was NOT using headphones, nor was I using the 'silencer' switch (above the volume switch).
But, I did plug the iPhone into the "dock". I've noticed several times before (and today) that when I plug-into the "dock", I randomly get a popup message saying "This accessory is not made to work with the iPhone". It then asks me if it should turn off WiFi to reduce audio noise. If I hit "No", several seconds (or several minutes) later, I'll get the same pop-up.
Since the "dock" has a line-out connector, I assume that the iPhone is recognizing this 'audio output device' and switching the audio outputs to it. I don't see this problem when I connect directly to the USB cable (remove the stand-up dock and just connect the cable).
So, I think the iPhone switches the audio output when it (randomly) sees this problem. Because it's obviously confused about whether/not the 'audio device' is plugged in, I think it left it in a goofy state when I unplugged it from the dock. After unplugging it, I noticed that email notifications stopped working.
I'm not sure exactly what I did to fix it. I re-sync'd with iTunes, and I rebooted the iPhone.
It seems to work now. I plan on avoiding the "dock" from now on. (of course, I could still run into the similar issue others are seeing with the headphone adapter, but I don't use them often).
Same issue with mine today (loss of sounds). Plugging in and out restored the keyboard and text message sounds, but not the "click" when you'd unlock the phone. I hope Apple gets this mess solved. I like the phone, but little **** like this will end up killing them.
I came across the same issue this morning and was able to solve it by plugging my headphones in and out. Some details:
I lost all sounds (including from the earpiece) except for the ringtone. My microphone also didn't work when making calls. I think this is definitely a software bug and I think I know what the cause was in my situation: I was listening to music, paused it, and left my desk for a meeting. When I got back, my iPhone was asleep. I unplugged my headphones and headed to lunch. I think this is what caused my iPhone to think the headphones were still plugged-in...even after I soft resetted it.
