thanks to both of you for the answers - but my yahoo mail id is so out there that i would keep it even with mail plus

would that make a difference in wether or not i have to use other

basically i just want yahoo plus to get rid of the ads and to be able to use the yahoo smtp server for outgoing mail for another id - evidently you cant do that with the free ids and the smtp server on my work id doesnt work with Iphone - it wants TLS security and the Iphone uses SSL

right now im using authsmtp.com but yahoo plus is cheaper and authsmtp has a limit on the number of msgs you can send each month - evidently yahoo mail plus doesnt

so i thought i would ompare the 2 but if i have to change my setup its not worth it - i can live with the ads and they dont show up on iPhone anyway

In using the term 'ads' do you mean junk mail and spam, etc.?

Yes you can set up a junk account in mail plus that will allow you to screen that kind of mail but it may also screen some of the mail you would prefer to see as well.

I was unable to use TSL or SSL with my bizmail account from Yahoo. It is possible that I was implementing it incorrectly but I do get my mail.

I cannot address which email is cheaper or which is better. All I can say is that mail plus works for me.

I do not think changing the setup in the iPhone is that difficult but that is for you to judge.

The only difference between using one of the available presets is not having to manually enter the incoming and outgoing mail server for the account and the account's user name when manually creating the email account on the iPhone so I'm not sure why the focus on the preset or other.

Either way the account will be set up on the iPhone but when using Other and manually entering the incoming and outgoing mail server, you can specify the server port for the outgoing mail server if needed down the road which is not possible when using the preset.

If your Yahoo Mail Plus email address includes @yahoo.com with nothing else, you should be able to use the Yahoo Preset on the iPhone.

Since you will be able to access a Yahoo Mail Plus account with the Mail application on your Mac (if you use the Mail application), after successfully creating the account with the Mail application - specifying a different server port for the SMTP server, etc., you can transfer the account settings from your Mac to the iPhone automatically via the iTunes sync process.

If not, try using the Yahoo preset on the iPhone and if this doesn't work, select Other and POP as the account type which will require manually entering the incoming and outgoing mail server, user name, etc. as when creating the email account on any email client.

I have an ordinary "@yahoo.com" Yahoo Plus account. It works fine with the standard pre-configured iPhone settings. (Except for the occasional lapses in IMAP Push that lots of people are reporting. - Manual update works fine in those times.)

Can one access an ordinary Yahoo Mail Plus or paid account ($19.95/yr) as an IMAP or POP account with an email client?

If you used the Yahoo preset and a Yahoo Mail Plus or paid account can be accessed as a POP account only with any email client, you aren't accessing this account as a Push-IMAP account with the iPhone.
