Mute browser

Ever have itunes playing when some annoying pop up or other internet page starts playing music. I do. Does anyone know a way to mute the browser so that I can have itunes playing and not have intervening web music. I use safari and sometimes internet explorer so please don't tell me to switch to opera because I don't like it's interface at all. I only need to know how to do it in safari and/or internet explorer. Thanks,
