Camcorders

I have just purchased a Sony DCR-SR72E camcorder and was told it would work on Mac but it doesn't! I can pull photos off easily using iphoto but cannot view or transfer video capture to the computer. I have read that iLife 08 now allows this to happen so am waiting for my copy. Can anyone help because my hair is falling out!! Thanks
