iPod Serial Number

Hello,

I have a third generation iPod with a very scratched back panel. I have decided that I would like to replace it with one in better condition. Now, when I change the cover, the serial number won't match the one that comes up in iTunes as well as on the iPod itself, correct?. I know that really isn't a problem affecting the overall performance, but I would like to know if it is possible to change the serial number inside of the iPod. I would like to match the software serial number with the hardware serial number. Is there anyway to do this? If so, how do I go about locating the serial number via software?

Thank you.

I am still confused why people obsess about this sort of thing, especially an older one like yours. Do you spend great amounts of time staring at the BACK of your iPod? Anyway...
You might try Brasso first and see if you can polish up the back of the iPod and make it look new again.
Example of what I mean...
