Macintosh HD icon won't stay in place!

All of a sudden my Macintosh HD icon on the dektop won't stay in the upper right corner! Every time I reboot the icon shows up in the bottom of the icon column leaving an empty icon space in the top right corner where it should have been! Anybody have any idea of what might be wrong and possible solutions?

I've tried to repair permissions and double checked the start-up disk but nothing has worked so far...

baltwo: I removed the DS_Store file from the desktop but that didn't work either! Actually, it kinda half-worked since the icon didn't show up at the bottom anymore, but rather one step to the left instead! But still, it turns up at the wrong place...

Dale: I don't think that should be a problem since I have my desktop icons set to snap to grid. I tried to unclick "snap to grid" and move my icons around just to see if they would stay in place after a reboot. All icons did except for (of course) the Macintosh HD!

I'm starting to lose my hair on this one!

If Carolyn's suggestion didn't work, then I suspect a corrupt .DS_Store file (an invisible file) which maintains the state of all opened folders, which is what the Desktop really is. In the Terminal.app, assuming that it normally opens to your user folder, indicated by the tilde preceeding the prompt, type these commands (the bold items), followed by the hitting the return key:

*ls -al* -- should return a line similar to this:

-rw-r--r-- 1 baltwo baltwo 15364 Aug 15 17:37 .DS_Store

*rm ".DS_Store"* -- removes that file (you might have to preceed the command with sudo to get it to work

*ls -al* -- ensures that its gone; if so, quit Terminal and restart.

I've found if I put any other icons too close to the hard drive icon it will move after a restart or shutdown but not after sleeping it. This will also happen if you put the hard drive icon too close to the edge of your screen.
If I keep other icons a 1/2" away I have no trouble (distance varies depending on your screen size).

Cheers!
