24 inch iMac aluminum - Screen irregularities - (Photo!)

Is anyone else seeing this? My 24" iMac Aluminum screen is a full f-stop dimmer on the right side! I am a photographer and so I took a light meter reading of the screen, with desktop image set to light gray solid background.

I took my trusty light meter to the Apple store and checked 2 more 24" iMacs on display... both had the same problem, but not quite as bad as mine. (see photo below)

Local Apple store manager says that if the iMac screen is not "professional" enough for me, they'll be happy to take it back and sell me a pro unit and separate monitor. I say there is something very wrong with these units. I would not be happy with this machine even just for web browsing, email and casual photos, let alone attempting anything even REMOTELY professional!

I advise anyone reading this to do the same test... set the background desktop image to a "solid color" and evaluate before buying! You don't need a light meter, anyone can see it immediately.

Do you have even brightness or yellowing towards the middle.

Did th replacement lcd have zero color shift!

I just bought the imac.

But the color shift really is annoying .

Are the screens apple is using B GRADE? With this imperfections. Cheaper! EG Known DEFECT.

Seems like you're saying you got a A Grade Screen With No Gradient Issue?

Well folks...

Here is my beef with APPLE...

I have returned several iMac 3.06 Ghz for gradient displays...
I have spoken to the product specialists. I have spoken to executive customer relations. I have spoken to several members of management including the Genius staff @ APPLE!

None are aware of the gradient displays! HOW can they not be aware? 22 pages of complaints...

I returned several units of iMacs and they are all horrible.

Common issues...

Left side always brighter than right side... (backlight issue)
Yellowish tinge in center of display
Blueish tinge to the left or right of display with yellowish found.

I found 2 perfect LCDs so far but they had other problems... BURNT pixels... Lovely

When I spend $3000 on an iMac, I want it perfect.

This has been an ongoing issue since 2005! Why hasn't Apple done anything. They charge a premium for the iMacs.

Apple has an amazing OS. Can't say the same for the hardware.

Very disappointed Apple!

Apple if you are out there and listening.... NOW YOU KNOW!

Get a hold of your cheap LG displays and use better ones PLEASE and bring your QC up to par. I will do a full return and probably go back to Windows until Apple can get it right in 2009.

Finally our good old 20" white iMac gave up for the last time. Second mother board failure since 2005. Since it is no longer covered by AppleCare, we had no choice but to purchase a new iMac. This time we got the 20" Aluminum, and since more than a year has passed since the 24" Aluminum iMac that started this thread, I thought the newer 20" would be worth a try.

It's OK... not great, just OK. The display is no where near as professional as the 20" white iMac, and it does have a slight darkening towards the top this time, the thing I most dislike about it is that when you view off center (left or right) a few degrees, it color shifts towards yellow. The only word that comes to mind to describe this display is "cheap".

I am disappointed with the quality of the display but I can live with it since it's not being used for any sort of critical work. I still can't get over the fact that the original 20" white iMac (G5 1.8 GHz) only lasted for 3 years and burned out 2 motherboards, a power supply, video inverter and Hard Drive!!!

I cannot wait to see how this one holds up!!!

I just wanted to chime in here and mention that after reading most of the posts in this thread, I have a thought:

Any magnets or other equipment that are close to the panel WILL cause discoloration and brightness differences!

Since the iMacs have lots of "stuff" against the back of the panel (hard drive, video card, DVD writer, speakers etc.) I would not be at all surprised if that is the reason for everyone's woes and the reason for the very consistent defects (the equipment behind the panel is always in the same places). Not to mention HEAT problems and variations.

I know from experience that these things have massive effects on LCD panels. Just try putting your speakers or USB hub right against the back of your LCD monitor to see what I mean. Anything that creates a magnetic, or electromagnetic field will mess with the panel in my tests. (not referring to the iMac panel, just ANY LCD panel)

Any thoughts people?

I Bought one 24'' last december. Screen was ok at the beginning, but replaced due to dead pixels, and now I'm having huge color differences along the screen, mostly noticeable in grey backgrounds. White balance in the middle area is warmer than in the corners. A grey background goes from blue/gray, gray yellow/gray, gray, dark blue/gray

I sent it back for repair again, and they say screen and video card were replaced again, but I don't see a change. Here are all the pictures. Let me know if you can spot the difference, as most people wont.

afterXleep: it looks like exactly my screen. =( i wanted to go for change my screen, but if you got screen like that, it seems like not to much chance to get a 100percent good quality screen, and im not shure if i will go or not. such a shame apple using this bad quality screen for this good machine. =( and they acting like there would not be any problem with that...
SHAME ON YOU APPLE/Steve Jobs!!!

Feb 21, 2009 3:47 PM in response to afterXleep

It's the same screen. Impossible for any 2 to be exactly the same, as this is!!! If this truly is a different photo, then the screen was not replaced! This whole thing is just too weird! It doesn't cost Apple any more to put good screens in these machines.... they just need to be firmer with their suppliers and reject more!

The new 20" aluminum iMac has an even worse screen than the 24". It fades from dark to light, top to bottom. And, side to side viewing angle is horrible, goes completely yellow at 45 degrees left or right. Very disappointing considering all Apple screens were excellent just a few years ago regardless of price. What's next?

I bought a new iMac awhile back. I returned it for a abnormal bright red pixel, and a portion of the glass was defective. The second one I returned, was for this gradient issue.

Now today I see that Apple has released new versions of the iMac. Perhaps they fixed the display gradient issue in the new ones. Anyone seen a new iMac to tell if it has been fixed?

Mar 15, 2009 11:48 AM in response to yeaok

Hi.

I bought a new iMac 24" 2.66Ghz on March 6th, a couple of days after it was introduced. I have exactly the same problem as Peter Mars. As if his picture is a picture of my own iMac. I looked at other aluminum iMacs in the store (the new models of course) and none had a perfect screen. Brighter on its left then on its right side.

So don't expect the new iMacs (2.66Ghz, 2.93Ghz and 3.06ghz) to have this problem solved.

Mar 18, 2009 12:54 AM in response to Peter Mars

I just got a new, march 09 24" iMac. I've owned Macs for 20 years!

Severe gradient, left to right (bright to less bright)

Yellowish tinge in the middle, which seems worse towards the bottom.

So this is NOT fixed in the newly released models.

To those who would argue that this is to be expected on a "non-professional" machine, I would say that my previous "non-professional" G5 iMac did not have any such problem.

I could NOT use this computer without "shades" installed.

So I don't know what to do. This is the perfect machine for me (price/performance/storage). But I don't know if I can handle exchanging it for another unit that would have the same problem.

Infuriating!

I have to say that my new iMac 24" currently looks ok but over the last 6 months I've had to return 2 x 23" Cinema Displays (bought just before they were canned) that had faults with 'persistence', 1 x 23" Cinema Display with appalling 'persistence' that renders it useless and now has been disposed of because it was 9 weeks out of warranty and now I have a new Macbook (well, 3 months old) that has a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen that won't be fixed due to only being 1 pixel.

The iMac fits my needs and budget too but to be honest, I'm going to have to get saving because the best way to enjoy OS X is to NOT have an Apple Display as they are all over priced and inferior to several other displays on the market that offer 3 year warranties as standard and can be calibrated perfectly much easier than Apple Displays.

The moral of my tale, save the pennies and buy Mac Pro's with 3rd party screens. The only way to go.

I'm curious as to what your resolution with the display was. I just had the display replaced in my White intel iMac because of the display being uneven. The replacement has the same issue. I brought it back to the Apple Store. Waiting for the"Lead" Tech's response.
I wish Apple would come clean and admit that there's a problem with a lot of these LCD's.
