MacBook Pro - How do I turn of the pulsing light?

I've recently purchased my first Mac, but there's one thing that's driving me crazy. I cannot turn off the pulsing light on the front when I put it to sleep. I've looked everywhere.

I live in a small place and even though I put it to sleep, it lights up my whole room when it pulses. It also seems to drain the batter a little faster than my last laptop which really went to sleep. 😉

Why would Apple design a system that lights up the world with a bright pulsing light and create additional battery draw while "sleeping"?

Why wouldn't they? Most laptops have an LED that lights up, or blinks, or does something to tell you that the laptop is sleeping, as opposed to being powered-off.

The pulsation is something handled by a simple timer circuit and has nothing to do with the laptop "not really sleeping", or whatever it was you claimed.

As for "additional battery draw"... you don't know much about it, do you? That's a simple LED.

There must be a way without cracking it open.

Why must there be?

From the Apple Forum terms of use: Be polite. Everyone should feel comfortable reading Submissions and participating in discussions.

I found this discussion looking for answers to this question myself. It's not a stupid question and not everyone is as informed as you seem to feel you are. Does it make you feel better to talk down to novice users?

Saksiri-San, if you even continue to follow this thread, I just throw mine in my laptop bag, it annoys me too and is far brighter than most of the red or green LEDs on most laptops. And please ignore the rude comments like these from know-it-alls who get defensive over legitimate questions.

Marc, I would suggest actually trying to help those with questions or keeping your comments to yourself. It's a waste of time reading crap like what you've posted.

My eye glass case covers it perfectly. 🙂

Seriously, I've started carrying black electrical tape with me when I travel. The binking light syndrome goes beyond Apple. I've been in hotel rooms where there's been a blinking black light on the back of the TV that lights up the room as bad as the laptop. Thermostats, hair dryers in the bathrooms, clocks... Without tape a dark hotel room doesn't exist.

Ha... that's a great tip! I'm in a hotel 3 to 4 times a week and I have the worst time falling asleep unless the room is pitch dark. I also need a little white noise. That's where my MacBook comes in. I use Ocean Waves.app and turn the display off. Then I set something in front of the LED so it won't wake me up in the middle of the night when it goes to sleep.

I'm packing some electrical tape for my trip tomorrow!

You cracked me up when I read this. After I got my powerbook, I also got a new bed & headboard - the bookcase kind that I could set my laptop on when I went to bed. The first night I did that, The whole room was lit up. I thought, what the...IS that glow? Where is it coming from?
I just turned it around so the light was pressed right up against the wall and it's ok. I still can't believe how well it lit up the room.
As for the tape....I had another use for that. I was so paranoid to have a camera pointed at my face when I was online all the time, that I put tape over the isight. Funny thing...when I went over to my neighbors to see their son's new imac, he had tape on his too.
