Photoshop CS3 causing new iMac to hang

I have an issue with Photoshop CS3 hanging my iMac.

When the application is active but in the background and unused for a while and I return to use it the entire machine becomes unresponsive, the mouse cursor can still be moved around the screen but nothing can be clicked (wireless mighty mouse), force quit can not be invoked to kill PS.

I have to resort to switching of the machine in order to get it back up.

Has anyone else seen this, either on an iMac or other intel macs..?

Hi Richard,

I've been experiencing the very same, and then upon restart, a permissions repair reveals serious directory damage to the disk, fixable only with Disk Warrior.

I tried everything to sort this out... and think I may have cracked it when I unplugged my empty iPod dock! It was an old 3rd gen. dock, and I think the iMac didn't like it sat there empty.

Things seem to be working ok for the moment, touch wood. Is there anything other than keyboard / mouse on your USB ports?

Hope that helps,
Scott

Scott,

I have a 1 Firewire & 1 USB port filled (both peripherals not powered at the time). Strangely though permissions are not effected.

I was wondering if it was due to the amount of RAM installed (1GB) and photoshop trying to capture the RAM it needs to run therefore causing the lockup..?

I am still waiting for my local Apple Store to get the new RAM modules in..

Not to dismiss your problem by any means, I thought I'd report my experience since I'm running PS CS3 as well. I'm on a 24" iMac and PS CS3 has been running well for me.

In addition to the keyboard and my Epson all-in-one printer (plugged into the back), I have a Logitech cordless mouse whose dock is plugged into the keyboard, and I have a USB 2.0 Maxtor hard drive plugged into the back.

I am getting general problems when I try to use my Belkin usb hub and when I use my usb card reader for any length of time, but I can't see that they have had any effect on running PS CS3.

Like I said - not to dismiss your issue - I just thought it might be helpful to share about my peripherals etc.

Good Luck,
Frank B.

I use the CS3 package professionally and have no trouble but it needs more than 1GB RAM, imo. I wouldn't go near it with less than 2GB and am considering doubling that as my current files are huge and my machine is sluggish with them. IMO there is no such thing as too much RAM for Illustrator and Photoshop. Even InDesign likes more than 1 to be totally happy.

I've been running the CS3 master suite and the only problem I've had is with Flash. Though Flash is a notoriously buggy program and freezing wasn't the only glitch I've had with it. I'm also on the older white intel imac so the 1.1 update isn't an issue. But so far my experiences with photoshop on the imac have been just fine.
I don't know if it matters, but right now i have my keyboard, mouse and intuos tablet connected to the computer USB ports and my all-in-one canon printer connected to the keyboard. They all seem to be working together happily.

I have exactly the same problem on the two new iMacs we have at the office.

Using Photoshop CS3 (although it did happen when using Fetch once - Photoshop was on in the background though) it will often freeze the machine... the pointer still moves (and will sometimes turn to the spinning beach ball) and iTunes still plays. In fact, the keyboard controls for volume still work as well.

It's irritating as my old G4 733 worked like a dream (well, apart from it being slow!)

I've called Apple and they've run through the usual stuff; PRAM, Hardware test, Disk verification... all seems fine though.

I'm reluctant to send the machines for repair as we use them all the time and when they're crucial for the business, we can't afford to send them away.

I also thought it might be my iPod dock connected, but without an iPod in it, but I've had crashes even when it's disconnected.

The new Airport Extreme's wireless connection seems dodgy as well, but that's another story...
