Power surge on USB port - dead iPod.

I have an 8GB iPod Nano (2G). Last night I plugged it into the USB port on my PC and a little balloon popped up above the taskbar saying something along the lines of "A power surge has occurred on your USB port. Remove any devices attached to it and click here to reset it."

I did so, however now my iPod will not turn on, and is not being detected in My Computer, iTunes etc.

I would surmise that the internal workings have been fried by the power surge, but I thought I would check here first to save the trouble of getting it replaced.

I have tried the 5 R's.

It certainly sounds like you burned it up. Unfortunately, the popup message was about ten seconds too late. The worst part is, if my conclusion is correct, Apple won't help you.

The USB port is not going to send sufficient power to burn up your iPod.

Is your computer perhaps a laptop? If not, which USB port were you connected to, front or rear?

In the meantime just let it sit for a day, connect it to power (wall charger works best) and charge it for at least 30 minutes then Reset it (hold down the menu and center buttons for 6 seconds) while it is still connected to power. You may have to try this several times. When it comes to life, Restore it in iTunes then fully charge it.

Before contacting Apple, you may just need to reset it.
Put the hold switch to the OFF/White position. Now toggle it ON/orange then back off again. Then press and hold both the MENU and center buttons on the iPod and hold them for a good 15 seconds or so. Your iPod should reboot starting with the Apple Logo screen.
If it doesn't work the first time, give it a second or third go. Sometimes it takes a few/several tries.
